time to raise the prices?

having that kind of sale is encouraging of course. but how many sales like that have you had in all the years you're in aj? i presume you have some years there. tier structure would be useful on p5, but no chance of that happening in the near future. i talked to the staff about this, they said not anywhere soon : (

It certainly would be nice to have the tier structure here.
Well, I think in about a year of being on AJ (actually having music up for sale), I have had about 5 of the higher tier sales (I'm lumping "extended" license in that category, since that's what AJ had before the tier structure).
LivingroomClassics 11 Nov 2014 20:24
that is really nice. i didnt think you had that many. in the about 5 months when i was on aj, i never had any.

Let's face it, we sell these songs here because we can't get them into the upper tier production music libraries with better rates. That being said, we can't charge what they charge, but to compete on selling at the lowest price is insane. I'm all for changing the deal here and using tiers that start at $50, which is reasonable for this market level. But if Pond5 won't do it, I'm pretty sure we're stuck because so many people will stay with bargain basement prices.

I am moving my prices up little by little to see what happens here. I became a member here in 2012, but didn't start uploading anything until about October 2014. I started at $29.95, which is very low in my opinion, and had some sales (which I won't post on my page until it's a meaningful number). Yesterday, I moved it to $39.95 and let's see if sales are consistent. My goal with these songs is to get them to at least $49.95 and be consistent everywhere I sell them.

I think if people take a look at pricing on other media asset sites, they'll see that plenty of them have set price structures determined by the site and not the artist. Those prices are sometimes much higher than what the artists set here and the sites are doing well. I know of two other media asset sites with good traffic that use a two tier structure. Basically, "standard" and "enhanced". On one of those sites, standard = $49 (no broadcast use) and enhanced = $419 (broadcast use, etc.). On the other site, standard = $250 and enhanced = $500. The second site is the bigger and more popular site and those are their royalty free prices. They also have higher rights managed prices and the music there is very good and very competitive. I don't want to mention names while on Pond5, but you can run a web search or contact me from my website link on my artist page. Note that these are not "sign-up and sell" sites. You have to be accepted in and screened or go through a music partner library that supplies these media asset sites with music.

All the tracks I have here are pending review at the second site I mentioned above. I'm in that library based on a prior relationship with a music library, but there's not guarantee any of my recently submitted music will get posted. For the ones that get accepted, I'll either raise them to match or drop them from this site (and some others) because it would be a bad idea to sell the same thing here for so much less and the other site has a higher budget level customer base. Since that has a two tier scenario and this site doesn't at this point, dropping them from Pond5 might be the option I take. The ones that aren't accepted into that library will keep inching forward here and elsewhere until they hit a brick wall. I sell on another site with two tiers and have them set to $39.95 and $89.95 with the higher one being the "auto-selected" license.

I don't like selling through marketplaces, but when the songs don't get into the better production music libraries, and they're just sitting around, this is the only option. We have the power to make some change because nothing sells if we don't provide. As MichealNorman said, from my personal experience, exclusive deals can sometimes pay-off, as can some higher level RF. But your music can sit on a shelf there too. For me, networking with local media production companies works because I'm in a good area for that (Northern VA/DC). But you've got to do something with your old tracks and rejected demos, right? Let's make that worthwhile.

As for AJ (it's already been named here, too late to be polite now) - I'm not selling anything I can't register with a PRO unless it's a stinger or really short intro. AJ doesn't accept PRO registered music at this time (might eventually change). That second site I mentioned above is "performance royalty free", but they accept PRO registered music, their standard rate of $250 is good and they are much more popular with higher budget buyers than AJ. Both are a 35% split for non-exclusive, but I think that standard license fee at AJ is only $18 for an over 2min song, $14 for 1 to 2 min and $11 for under 1 min. That means the unnamed site gets you $87.50 standard where AJ gets you $6.30 standard for the same song. Enhanced licenses at the unnamed site get you $175 versus $107.10 and the unnamed site is much more likely to get you an enhanced license.

AAMediaMusic, how many audio sales did you have per year or per month, on that unnamed site?

It appears that curators are too loyal to the tracks and sometimes their cost estimation is a little bit overcharged. For this reason I ususlly reduce fixed prices - to my mined thats quite approprite. Sorry for my english))

Hi everyone, I am new on P5. My name is Vito, but as known as Piervito. I posted 11 songs and I made the curators set the prices. They went from 15 dollars to 45.As a test I placed a post at $50. So far no takers. Does anyone make some money onP5?
AAMediaMusic 20 Mar 2015 01:59
UPDATE - No change in number of sales one month after moving from $29.95 to $39.95. The number of sales was the same despite a price increase. As a test, I recently moved in the opposite direction down to $24.95 for a bit to see if sales go up or continue to stay the same. If there are again no major changes in sales after a price decrease, I suspect that search engine optimization is more important than your price. That being the case, tweaking your metadata is probably the key to more sales.

I'll try to remember to post my answer in a week or two.

4 weeks on P5 and not a single sale yet ... too bad.
