Merging Formats - How is the that done here?

No Dave you didn't miss anything. The following is an email to Tom and his response September 5, 2009:
This question comes up time and again. Is P5 ever going to offer down conversions? Or is pricing a big issue in not doing so?
"Yes, the plan is to offer it, with pricing remaining the same for all resolutions, or determined by algorithm, depending on the artist,s preference."
So no official announcement has been made thus far.
Lovemushroom, Smudlack and Time_lapse I have seen Lee's page and how he set it up but he also added this in the text "This is available in 1080p / 720p / progressive PAL and progressive NTSC." While Lee has sold a good number of his clips multiple time I don't believe it has helped his ranking or sales compared to artist like Spotmatik, Stockshooter and many others who have only one or two formats listed. Just check the Artist Resources best week and best month reports.

So back to my original question at the start of this thread. Is Jason correct that Pond5 down converts HD files to NTSC and PAL automaticly? Can't quite get that straight. Apparently this is a feature which will be offered so but is currently not available here at Pond5.

Pond5 now started merging formats! Thanks!
It shows all formats with different prices. Instead of just merging, P5 added other formats price info in each movie and kept all formats still visible in P5 gallery & seach. Good idea.
I believe they test merging my clips because I have the most clips with all formats already uploaded.

Sorry about the late response to this.
Originally we had an "associate clips" on my_uploads but it was very rarely used for it's intended purpose.
Right now we have some internal forms for quickly overview and associate clips. Something that doesn't scale very well.
We're considering to automate this by automatically associate clips of (roughly) the same length and the same filename. We could add a flag so you could opt in to having your clips doing this.

I mentioned this in another forum posting today, but it's relevant here...
A "Consolidate Clips" option in the drop-down box on the Uploads page would be great, where we could check the boxes next to the clips to associate and consolidate them into a single entry.
Even better would be a column in the csv uploader that would allow for parent (HD) and child (other formats) relationships.
I have 7 formats of every clip and being able to scale to large numbers of files with a csv would be a big help.

I would suggest that the "available formats" should always be absolutely identical with respect to content, frame rate and field rendering, and just differ in resolution. We could e.g. use
identicalfilename_
1080p, 1080i, 720p, DVNTSC, DVPAL, (MM480, MM240, which I´m not really favorizing)
Everything else should be "similar versions", associated by artists via clip links in the description fields.
It would be great if, under these conditions, later submissions could be included into the "available formats", even if they´re higher resolutions.
Well, you´ll do the right thing for sure :).

From the main Pond5 page, select only the NTSC checkbox and search on "canyonlands 11 x30".
Lovemushroom's merged clip of the Grand Canyon is in the search result, but as an HD clip, not NTSC.
If all of our clips are merged, I think this would be confusing to a customer that is looking for NTSC but sees only HD in the search results.

You are correct, however once you click on the result it does show that it is available in NTSC as well. Perhaps this can be easily fixed with a simple set of words such as "multi-formats available" appended to the simple description or title. Or even a simple note at the top explaining that the system always shows highest format available.
