Well said. Remember if a clip is used in a commercial tv advertisement, the ad could easily have cost several hundred thousand dollars to make. Many marketing companies pay humdreds of dollars for a single use digital photo. Pond5 clips are a real bargain. Agreed some clips are used on simple web sites but heck ... a hundred bucks is still cheap cheap cheap. Great discussion and lots of great info being shared.

Having a simple list that includes companies like Disney, CNN, Fox, GM, Ford, New York Times, etc etc gives a real use behind our art.***

Well don´t forget the clips are RF, and RF should not be cheap since it is consider to be re-use again and again. For graphic artist is specially important not to give away their work for low. For travel videographer the cost is oil, hotel, food, car, time, hardware, software, etc etc..

I believe some are missing the point of what stock footage is all about. Media companies buy footage/photos so they don't have hire a production crew, which cost big bucks,to shoot. They'll pay what ever it cost for that footage because the client is paying thousands for the project. We are in a sense the production crew and stock footage companies are middlemen and they overhead cost to. So you shoot a 5 sec. clip of a cow in a pasture and sell it for $20.00 how many clips would P5 have sell a day to cover their overhead and make a profit. More MONEEEEEY!!!

Wow, been a while since we had such a lively discussion here. :)
Three simple statements to consider:
1) It is WAY too early in the microstock footage game to make a real decision. When Microstock photos was young, everyone laughed at the prices. But these days I know quite a few that are doing extremly well.
2) Competition - we compete worldwide. If we want to sell we not only need to be better than others, we also need to be more present everywhere and we have to compete (to some point) with other people's prices. But compared to elsewhere we have one BIG advantage: 50%. Sell a clip here for the same price as on IS and you get more than twice the payout.
3) Of course we need to cover our costs. Getting back thos €2.000 I had invested in my SD clips (plus maybe the same for fuel and props) was easy enough. But getting back those €15.000 I have now invested in HD equipment is going to be a tough ride.
I see this as a long term investment. I want to be ready when this market really gets going - but I also need to live. So I shoot when I can and invest when I can - but I make most of my income with other sources: Custom shots, 3D animations, web design, database management - literally everything that offers reasonable pay and/or good contacts for shooting some more stock.
So, to summarize: I have absolutely no idea what the "correct" price is. But maybe I have a few ideas where to look for answers. ;-)
Btw: It's 8.95% currently. It's bad weather season, but with the beginning of snow season I'll be aiming for 10% again. Be prepared for the hunt! ;-)

I think that the current system at P5 with "set the price yourself", combined with at least 3 different bottom lines for Multimedia, SD and HD, maybe even the different qualities of HD, to prevent exaggerations towards the downside, would be the best approach of all 3 stockvideo sites we are usually talking about (I do not have experiences with IS though). Clips should always be priced not only based on the their resolution but also, and I think mainly, the subject, the filming and the audio. But this would have to be implemented technically, so if it comes we won´t see it until version 1.0.
