When?

Everybody is talking about a higher price and in some case I agree with you but nobody is talking about quality. Sorry but I can see not only here, on ANY Stockfootage site much, toooo much homemade clips who are not worth to pay more than 1$. First we have to push the quality on a higher level and than we can talk about higher or min. prices for each format. BTW, I like to set my own prices here!

Hey guys, just to clarify a few points about our pricing policies...

First, the $10 that appears automatically when you edit your clips is not meant to be a suggested price -- it is there simply because we had to have some number in the field to keep the database happy. Yes, it's confusing, so we're going to find a way to get rid of it. But the point is, don't consider $10 to be a recommended price.

Secondly, as Phantomewo says, we do have purchasing and other statistical data to work with, and we're accumulating more of it all the time. So for those of you who have selected "set the price for me" on your clips, we will periodically be adjusting the price (we'll let you know when we do) as we determine what will optimize revenues. So if a clip will sell twice as much at $20 than it would at $30, we will price it at $20.

For anybody who is not sure about what to price their clips, I would recommend chosing the "set the price for me" option. Remember that you can always change it back later if you're not happy with the price we set.

On the quality issue, you're right - we've been raising the bar and rejecting more clips, and will be doing a "spring cleaning" to clean out work that's not selling. Obviously, the more waterfalls and grazing cows and sunsets we get, the pickier we will be about which ones make it in.

Don-You're right, and thanks for pointing it out to me. I should price clips higher in order to level things out here. I'll re-adjust my price structure.

did you not notice that price is most important today, not quality. live would be much easier if it would be the other way around!

Just remember that many of us are selling HD clips on other sites for $159 each and only $50 here for the same clip. Hummmmm wonder why? Well my reason is I believe P5 will really get the marketing going and the volumn of sales will be well worth the wait. Like Tom has said, volumn does matter. I only believe that it is possible to find an even balance and quality HD or SD clips are worth far more than what many are selling them for. I like the way P5 has stayed fairly neutral in this pricing discusion. This thread has been great although maybe a little off subject from the original indent ... sorry but worth the thoughs and discussion.

I ask myself WHY a producer would want to buy stock footage. The way I see it the clips that are harder to get should be priced higher. For example ... if you have clips of the Iraq war, those clip should be expensive. Why? Because you are counting on the fact that the buyer will be hard pressed at finding such clips. Most people are unwilling to go into a warzone to get stock footage. On the otherhand a clip of cows grazing, no matter how good it is, is still easy to get. Do you all think some low budget documentary producer is going to pay 150 dollars for a clip of cows just because its in HD? Chances are he is willing to drive out in the country to get it himself. (lol I have a cow grazing clip by the way)... but I digress, I think quality and the difficulty of obtaining a clip, are most important. In this day in age everyone has a camera, and every kid has a basic video editing platform. A video clip is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

I don't mean to offend anyone, I am just very blunt. :)

P.S> What if Pond5 had some sort of global variable system that would adjust everyones price by an extra amount. If pond5 wanted to increase everyones prices by 5% the variable could be set to 1.05 X the set price. Each user could check off an option that would allow the variable to affect all of the owners clips prices.

That's why P5 has the option to allow them to set your price. They have stats that should allow them to price them to maimize sales. It's in both P5 and our benefit to sell lots of pics. I agree that one-of-a-kind or hard to repeat clips should have a greater value. If you look at sales at P5 you will see that there are clips that have sold for well above $100 each. I kinda agree about the cows grazing except I have sold cows grazing for well over $100 and that same scene could easily be repeated. If you look at prices to hire a photo / videog for a specific shot of any kind they will spend a lot more than any of the clips being sold here at P5. One advantage is here the buyer can look at a lot of different cows grazing vids and knows what he is getting. Remember there is a forum where specific requests can be made.

I don't think anyone is trying to equalize all the clips or set prices. For me I'de rather sell one clip at $100 than two for $50 each. We're all waiting to see the upgraded P5 site, I'm sure there will be better guaidance as the site improves. Heck if you have a once in-a-life time clip that is impossible or difficult to replicate I'de start somewhere well above a couple hundred dollars if indeed the clip has market potential. Ducks on a pond are probably not even worth wasting video tape on ... ooopppps I just UL's a couple and really felt guilty in doing so. The better the clip the better it's value ... better means quality of the shot as well as marketability and easy of replicating it. Best of luck to all of us.
