Newbie Question - Converting from Sony's AVCHD format

My apologies for newbie question that follows, but I really hope someone here can help.
I'm just getting my feet wet with stock video, and I am running into problems trying to get the video into the format that pond5 requests. My source video is AVCHD (Sony with a .m2ts file extension). I've tried several tools to move this to the .mov wrapper that pond5 wants, but I have not liked the results.
When I used VLC, the resulting video was not recognized by QuickTime at all.
When I used Vegas Movie Studio, the option to render the video as QuickTime 7 had several options. The uncompressed option resulted in a video that is approximately 8 GB in size (my original footage is around 50 MB). The next highest quality option is the 3 Mbps video. The resultant video is much smaller, but ugh. The audio is horrendous.
In addition to VLC and Vegas Movie Studio, I also have the following software available: PMB, ffdshow, and Ulead VideoStudio.
My original file is sharp and reasonably sized, but it is not in a format that pond5 lists as acceptable for upload. So I ask those of you with much more experience what you would suggest.

If you're using a Mac, try Clipwrap - it's $50 and will "re-wrap" an avchd file into a QT, as well as other formats, inlcuding ProRes. I've found that sometimes the resulting QT looks a bit different than if I imported the avchd directly into my Avid, which is what I do, but not worse, just different (black levels, etc).

I have multiple flavors of Windows and Linux available, but I do not have a Mac. Any more suggestions?
