Earthquake!

If you live in Southern CA you had to feel the earthquake today. Preliminary magnitude 5.4 and centered in Chino Hills.
I live in Burbank and felt it pretty good. First some roll then shaking for about 10 seconds or so. No damage at my place and nothing fell from shelves or cupboards. I'd say it's the strongest one that I've felt since moving here in '94, about 9 months after the Northridge quake.

I lived in Sacramento a couple times and Victorville California in the desert above LA. There were several quakes when I was there. Some were small and other were a good shake. One sounded like a train approaching and as it hit the house it shook like a collision, kinda spooky. Some of the smaller ones made me feel like I was dizzy because of the slow motion and gentle rocking. Glad it passed with minor or little damage THIS time.

I lived through the Whittier and the Northridge as well as many others in my 30 years over in Orange County. - The craziest was the Whittier - I owned a waterbed on the second floor of an apt bldg in Anaheim. My wife of that time and I literally got thrusted out of the bed and landed on the floor. Of course me with my sick sense of humor just couldn't resist... I asked her "Did the earth move for you as it did for me my little hottie?" :) - She was pale white as she had just for the first time expirienced such an event. But she laughed and all was fine until we opened the closet - at which point all of our clothes came tumbling out. Another one was a quake early in the morning (Newport quake) - we dashed out of the condo and only after did I realize that I slept naked.. embarrasing to say the least. But the craziest was a fairly small quake in LA while I was watching the news with some friends visiting from overseas... The anchor quickly jumped under the anchordesk and the set started rumbling - we were about 35 miles away so I counted seconds and told my friends to stand in the doorway. They didn't know why, so I yelled and then about 6 seconds or so after it was on TV it hit us - it was a roller that lasted about 15 seconds. My friends were amazed that I knew it was coming.. I told them that i have a sixth sense about such things.. :) It took about a day for them to realize that I saw it on the "live" news broadcast and was able to figure it out that way. Oh, I miss those quakes now... all we have here in Tucson is monsoons and vicious lightning storms. Bummer..

We were visiting Korea on a vacation and our mother-in-law was watching our kids when one hit the LA area. We were watching TV on a military base and we also saw the anchor jump under his desk in LA. My waife got all worried and I spent the next two hours trying to call home. Mom-in-law said all was well and the kids loved the shake. My wife worried for the next week until we got home. For some reason wives just don't see the sense of humor in earth quakes.

The last earthquake we've felt here in Michigan was Apirl 18 , 2008 when a 5.4 hit Mount Carmel,Ill at 5:36am. Of course the only thing that wake me up at 5:00 in the morning is a wind storm.

I survived the SF quake in 87. I was at work at the time and my desk was next to a HUGE plate glass window. It was doing an interesting dance, so I got up and stumbled outside into the parking lot to get away from it. Plopped myself down in the middle and watched in amazement as I saw "waves" in the concrete and watched my car jump up and down as if it had hydrolics.

The window never broke, interstingly, however we lost a lot of computer monitors that fell from desks and shelves.

My commute home was typically 30 minutes, but that day it took me 7 hours. And when I got home (I had just moved to the area and was renting a room) I discovered the house I was living in had partially collapsed (nobody was home at the time).

Ahhh memories...
