Alpha Channels in Final Cut Pro

Am I missing something??? I want to purchase a video clip that comes with the colored version and an Alpha Channel version. So I downloaded the low-res comp to check it out. I put the colored version on top and the Alpha Channel version on the bottom and I apply the composite mode Travel Matte - Alpha to my top clip, and nothing changes??? What am I doing wrong???

Am I missing something??? - NO

My understanding is that you have a clip which has a matte (BW version) with the normal -color version -clip in one file. It's not the alpha key. With alpha key embedded you already have transparency and FCP recognize automatically.

Your solution should be :
V1 - matte layer
V2 - colored version and set it to Travel Matte - LUMA not alpha, as there is no alpha - you've just made it

After you're done and if export the file in a format which can handle alpha key (for example animation mov file) you'll get the transparency.

Hope this helps
