Pricing?

How much of a good idea do people think that pricing your own clips is? I am in two minds. I can see the personal advantage but it does give the site a sort of amateur feel. Also, to me, it gives the impression that no one really has any control over marketing. Thoughts?

I think it's great setting our own prices as long as we don't cheapen them too much. There are definately different quality between submitters that justify increased pricing. There are also some very short clips and some long duration clips, these should be priced at a different level. I still find it hard to understand a HD clip selling for $20 ... to me that's a give away and a photog doesn't value his work as professional. Also there are clips here selling for around $200 ... I doubt many of them will sell. We are all here as "independent contractors" and setting prices for various level of quality is not good business. If you set them too low you never pay for your time or equipment, too high and you never will sell very many. For me I love the 50% cut and set your own prices at a level that you think you are worth. Best of lucj to all of us ;)

I am tempted to go through the clips that I have online at the moment and give them all specific pricing. What would really help pricing I think and the professionalism of the site is a buy multiple option (I think this should be from grouped clips only) and the ability to buy lower res clips at a cheaper price. I have a feeling all this is coming but it is just a feeling.

$200 is not expensive, I sold a clip to the BBC last week for $250. It was only 8 sec, and nothing unique, anyone with a video camera could repeat it.

That's great!!! A give away at this point in business is not really needed. In the business world, once you go cheap it is very difficult to go back to a valid price. Price reductions must be random and unexpected and only for a very short period of time. When the word on Pond% really gets out to web builders, marketing and new organizations we will all wish we asked more money per clip. Reduced sizes of clips at a reduced price isn't needed until sales really start to level out. Presently sales are increasing so why reduce prices when sales are increasing?? If the clips are good and really ready for on-line or on-air marketing or news we are all selling our clips for too little. Heck I've sold a simple digital pic of a bed for $750 a couple months ago. And yes, anyone could have taken the same picture. Best of luck to all of us ;). Don
