When?

There are many simple landscape photo or video sell many thousands dollars, it depends on when you shot, lighting, quality etc. More important the client can find it, like it and fit to their project. It is like lottery. In this case those photo or video may or may not be in pond5 or SS. And HD is just a new coming standard in the market. SD video can sell lot of money too when client JUST want this clip, no matter what subject matter. More important it fit to the big project. Budget producer will look for clips cheaper, even they would like to have it for free, well they are promoting you.
News stock are valuable too when you are in right moment there (Luck!!) and you know where you sell it, AP, CNN etc. I do not see any non-professional would go to a war zone to shoot stock. Quite unusual and not very logic!!

I appreciate this thread and agree that generally prices should be higher then they are here. Once the site gets out of beta, I would like to raise my prices across the board. However, I have close to 1000 clips ... Will P5 come up with a way to make a batch change in pricing?

You can do that now, by selecting all your clips on your Uploads page, and choosing "set price" from the dropdown menu.

OK, Thanks, That worked good. It might be even better if there was a way to select all by type, (ie SD/HDV) or even select all in a range using the shift key.

But, now my prices are up and I encourage others to do the same. I see some good stuff here going for $10/$15. And with the demise of the US$ that is like half of what it used be ...

I think that I may even raise my prices again, once the site is out of Beta. I believe that most of us have been giving away the farm here. I know that others have mentioned it, but video acquisition costs us a lot! I don't think that I fully appreciated that as I was uploading from my archives because those trips were allready paid for. But this month I did some travel in Vietnam, where I, not a client, paid all of the expenses, for the sole purpose of shooting stock. Even though the cost of travel in Vietnam is relatively cheap, I am still going to have to sell a lot of clips before I even come close to breaking even on the trip. (OK, I had a great time traveling around Vietnam and shooting stock is a good way to write off adventure travel and all, but you get what I mean.) If you were trying to actually make a living off of stock, the prices would have to be a lot higher in order to cover the costs of travel ...

Establishing the right price in a new market such as micro stock is a delicate balance. Another major site (SS) has just dropped it's fixed prices by 2/3s! Producer response is quite mixed, major disappointment for some, others think it is the right thing to do. I guess the market will tell in the end.

Two of the great things I especially appreciate about Pond5 is the ability to set your own price and the 50 percent commission. In my opinion that's a great basis for business partnership in this industry. I think the key is to find your own niche, and produce quality footage. And the bonus at Pond5 is you have the freedom to determine the best price for your work!

Just wondering, what is the primary demographic of the buyer at P5. I was under the impression that the primary demographic was low budget producers who were looking for a cheaper alternative to istockphoto. By low budget producers I mean wedding videographers, budget documentarians, localized advertising agencies, indie filmakers...

I don't think Hollywood or CNN is buying from here...
I don't know maybe they are... ?? I have no idea who is buying.

By the way videoopp, your stuff is very difficult for most people to get, and I can see you have sold a lot. I would absolutely charge more for your clips... that is, assuming the buyer is willing and able to pay for them.
