Native 16:9 capturing and uploading from a Canon XL-2

Hello everyone,
My XL-2 has a native 16:9 ratio, but when I upload them onto pond5 and select the "native 16:9" selection, it stretches it out with bars still on top and bottom. When I select 4:3 ratio it is in correct proportion with the bars on top and bottom. Am I not capturing the clip correctly? They play in quicktime in the correct aspect ratio. Should I just stick to listing them as 4:3?

Not sure if I´m getting this right, but sounds as if your footage would already come with letterboxes (black bars on top and bottom). If so, they´re not really suitable for stock as clients generally do not want to pay for black pixels put on top of the clip. The decision is up to P5 of course.

There are 3 kinds of widescreen footage:

1. Both recorded and displayed as widescreen (HD 1920x1080, HD 1280x720).
-> select 16:9 native at P5.

2. Recorded in a -laterally squished- anamorphic format, but correctly displayed on widescreen TVs (HDV 1440x1080, DV 16:9 PAL (720x576) and NTSC (720x480).
-> select 16:9 anamorphic at P5 if you upload them in their squished original format.

3. "Fake" widescreen: Clips that have been recorded in 4:3 and then covered with letterboxes to make them look like widescreen on a 4:3 TV. They´re neither suitable for 4:3 project nor for widescreen projects, so don´t waste your time.

I think it´s pretty safe to say that HD 1080, HD 720, HDV and DV 4:3 have the best acceptance among buyers. DV 16:9 anamorphic is less popular, unless it comes from a HD source or a high end SD camera.

Good luck,
Stefan
