AcmeStudios,
That old bottle neck problem is still around eh? You're only as fast as your slowest device. So what do you think about using SSDs to boost performance? I don't know if they are as reliable as WD HDDs or are they?
Looks like I'll have to shell out more money than I am accustomed to. What I really want to do are 3D "extrusions" of fractals with fly-by and deep zooming explorations. This is the sort of fractal that I mean (with 1080 HD, 2k, 4k, and larger resolutions with as close to real time as I can afford):

Eddie,
That's a lot of backups to make. Is that all storage or is some of that redundancy? I'm utilizing about 5.5 TBs out of 9 TBs total just for fractal originals and backups..

Some drives are for backup. Most important stuff is saved on two different disks and im working on an external backup solution aswell. I don't use any raid configs.

Eddie,
I've looked at services like Carbonite but they weren't what I had in mind of an archive function. You might consider something like GoDaddy's unlimited bandwidth and storage. Then you can set as many passwords as you like on your archives through your favorite FTP program.
