Keywords Clarification

If admin or someone knowledgeable can clear some things up for me, maybe we can all benefit. Some of these issues have been addressed before, but different people give different answers, and the process seems to change a lot.

With the 25 keyword limit, I spend a lot of time weighing and deciding which keywords should be cut from the larger list of keywords that I use on the other sites. So I'm looking for ways to be more efficient with my keywords.

-- If I check a checkbox keyword, like "time lapse", do I not need to put "time lapse" in my 25? What about if I check "Buildings and Monuments"? Are both the words "buildings" and "monuments" now included in my keywords?

-- If I have a phrase keyword, like "brooklyn bridge", I'll put it in double quotations. But now is it unnecessary to include the keyword "bridge", since it's part of the phrase keyword? I read a post that says P5's search engine doesn't even differentiate or "see" the quotations, and would treat a 2-word phrase as two separate keywords. Is that true?

-- Is only one form of a word necessary? If I have the keyword "jump", does that cover "jumping" as well?

-- Do words in the description and title also work as keywords?

-- Is the penalty for having old clips with over 25 keywords now in effect? Do those clips rank lower in the searches?

Lastly, I've figured out this keyword formatting thing. Basically, phrases must be put in double quotations, and keywords can be separated by either spaces or commas, it doesn't matter. If you separate a phrase with a comma, it'll strip the commas, and count each word in the phrase as an individual keyword. So if your keywords are ...urban, city, new york city... , they will become ...urban city new york.... The duplicate "city" is deleted, and the keyword "new york city" becomes 2 separate keywords (new, york). However, if you submit it, and then open it up again, change something, and save it, then you'll lose your phrases and quotation marks and will have to put them in again. I hope that helps some of you.

Pond5 is the best of all the sites. I look forward to the day when they put a certain big site, which treats its contributors like crap and has unimaginably and increasingly ridiculous copyright policies, out of business.

Horror, I completely missed to answer this one.

- We have a layer on top that tries to match permutations and change a query from
time lapse
to (in this case)
(time lapse) or KCA0001

- The FTS search engine we use (Postgres tsearch) does not yet support phrases, but we have a workaround for simple queries. So now
brooklyn bridge
and
"brooklyn bridge"
generates a slightly different result set.

- We use the default Postgres tsearch english stemming dictionary/rules. So play and playing are both normalized to play.

- Yes but in the description the indexing has a much lower priority than keywords. The title has the same priority as description which perhaps is not ideal. We want to motivate you all to really enter good titles. I really want to stress this - the title is probably the most important thing to get right because of natural searches and we try to aim the SEO stuff at it.

A title like
skiing3
is interpreted by us and google as "skiing3" and not "skiing 3". Not many google or search pond5 for skiing3. Proper title is important.

- We're thinking of changing from 25->50 keywords and remove the description from the search index. Partly due to abuse and partly because this is what most of you seems to want.

- How to enter keywords is one of the things we brilliantly missed out on specifying so we get
taxi honking "new york"
taxi, honking, new york
taxi, honking, "new york"
or all three mixed. When you save a clip it tries to normalize this to
taxi, honking, new york

what about older clips? does it go back and fix those? I've looked at some of my old ones and they are words with no commas, ie dog bark animal
How would this skew results?

i think 25 keywords is good thing, i think that this is helpful to remove keywords spaming and 25 keywords are enough in most cases
50 keywords is realy to much, if people complaining about this raise it to 30-35 max

How about a priority system like the stock photo site starting with 'A' (not sure I can mention their name here)

They have 3 boxes:
1. Essential Keywords (50 character limit)
2. Main Keywords (300 character limit)
3. Comprehensive Keywords (856 character limit)

The single keyword box is great when a site is starting out and it needs to attract submitters but I recon as a stock site grows it needs to be looking at a multiple keyword box system.

let's keep P5 simple, not confusing like the I* site with a million check boxes. Already there are too many being put in, like three main categories and also a category check box. My vote is go back to the old keyword system and don't start to get to complex or checkbox crazy. ;). Just need to ensure keywords are accurate ... i.e. a power plant with smoke is not a glacier ;)
