Blackmagic Design New Raw File Format

Yesterday Grant Petty At Blackmagic Design announced a new raw format for their cameras and allowing developers and camera manufacturers to use it. It sounds great and will play files without graphic acceleration on computers without lots of power. They also have developed a video player.

Do you think this will take over from cinema dng and be a useful codec for stock video.

I read the announcement and the technology behind it sounds pretty good. Blackmagic Design is a major supplier of cameras, so this new codec (which is still in beta) will have a certain amount of acceptance. However, to be widely accepted Blackmagic will have to either give the codec to other companies for free or at very low cost. Otherwise, other companies (Red, Sony, Panasonic, Arri, etc.) will use the codecs that are already out there

I don’t see Red using it but this new BMD Raw might become a desirable codec for delivery in the same way as Red is perceived as a premium product. I’m tempted by the new BMPCC 4K and this codec is going to be free icing on the cake. I hope Pond5 will take a look at it and see if there is a use for it in the library.

I need a file format that is accepted equally with all agencies. Don't have time to process different for different agencies.
