Price Setting

Hello, everybody!

Recently I read posts on pricing and some were convinced that low price is the way to go. Let me share you my own experience.

I had for a long time used the smallest possible price and sales kept to a certain level. Then I tried to raise the price for some of my best clips. I was afraid they will no longer sell as they were not the unique clips with that concept and cheaper variations were available. Surprise! The priced clips kept selling. True, the number of sales went down, but the overall amount increased. So, I decided again to raise the price for more many other clips. Again I was afraid my sales will freeze. No longer surprize: the number of sales went down but again the total amount of earnigns went up. How could one explain that? I have the feeling that buyers do not appreciate low price but consider that a sign of low quality and prefer to buy a more expensive clip.

I think that buyers can jump here and explain if price is main factor for their purchase.

I have been a stock footage buyer for many years. My personal experience is this: Price is certainly a factor, if I find two comparable clips, I'll always pick the cheaper of the two. But how often does that happen? Not too often. I usually shop on sites that I know are in my price range to begin with, but sometimes there is a shot that is great. What can you do, you have to pay. It may not necessarily be a very unique shot, or something extremely difficult to shoot, but hey, it's cheaper to buy a nice stock clip than it is to re-do the shot, plus you save the time too.
If the shot is very, very easy to achieve, I don't expect to pay too much, but I am willing to pay for what I can't readily do myself.

inpost. Hey, thanks for your feedback. I was wondering if you could tell us a bit about how page ranking, that is the display of the images when they come up on your search, affect your buying choice? How deep to you search after the pages come up? Is the image normally on the 1st page? Do you need to adjust your search input? Do you normally use the default search setting on Pond5 or tweak the buy image age, artist, etc? Lots of questions! Hope you get the idea. Thanks

I don't really know to be honest, I search a few different sites. I am an animator/videographer by trade so I usually need something very specific if I can't shoot it/ create it myself from scratch so I don't usually get too many hits for what I need anyway. If its something that is fairly simple but its too much of a hassle to shoot, I'll just grab the first thing that's cheap. that's pretty much it.
