Jake,
A few years ago I went to Turkey and northern Iraq. I contacted the Turkish government and they issued me a license to operate. When I got there I was in a military dorm on the second floor. I strung a long wire dipole between building and a 2 meter on the roof. I'm not sure anyone even knew I had done it. I talked all over Europe and bounced packet across the Mediterranean to Tripoli and was able to packet on 2 meter back to the states. I actually had more frequency freedom than the US military in Turkey.

Cool Don! I didn't know you were a HAM operator too.
I tried packet video for a short while, using a webcam. It didn't have much resolution but sure was fun to see an image coming through just using a transceiver connected to your PC.
I'm sure in that expanse of land you're on now you can put up a huge dipole array.

This is what happens when you fall asleep when the first Star Wars episode aired on HBO for the first time. After that nap, I needed to get on AOL to see what's happening in this new thing called the Internet - hence when I signed up for the very first time many years ago, I was the very first Vader on AOL - from there on it just stuck. Vader is dutch for father - Vater is German for father - since I am neither (I actually am Swiss) I decided to stick with Vader. Vader always gets people's attention. So I kept it as my handle for everything. But I look a lot better without that helmet and mask. Darth Tator sits in my office and keeps his eyes on everything, literally - because people just need to play with him and take him apart.

Thats cool Jake, I have a shortwave reciever, I guess its the frequency right below AM.
Ionescu is Romanian right? Anything with "escu" means "son of" .. I notice a lot of people with old english or germanic names here. It seems that many of the artists are from Germany. (BTW Rammstein is the best industrial heavy metal band ever )...
I want to know where the name "Pond5" comes from. SOunds like the name of a space station or something, or maybe the name of a secret government facility. lol!

You are perfectly right Ironstrike! Ionescu is pure Romanian and it means son of.
For me, Pond5 sounds like a fish farm pond. We are fishes in a pond :)

Youseehim is a funny sounding out of my last name, Useem. I got it from a mug at my dad's fraternity in the 60s.
