Is vertical video selling well in Pond5?

Is anybody selling vertical videos? Is anybody shooting at 5.7k or 6k and uploading both horizontal UHD and vertical videos?

I've got a curiosity about this as well. As one who loathes the vertical video (in a landscape player) but sees the value of it on skinny phones, I also love vertical photos, and today in the snowy sparkle forest of tall trees, making some vertical shots was an obvious thing to do. How much I should do that? Dunno. So responding here so I get updates and find out.

I suspect buyers of vertical videos might want to pay less, but that might be a rash assumption.

i recently sold a vertical video on adobe, so ofc there is a demand but my portfolio on both websites are small so i cant tell how much is the demand for it

I got into this last year for AdobeStock, simply because they were asking for verticals due to increased demand. My first thought was that because it was aimed at social media (AS even suggested using 'vertical video social media format' in the title) that this was most likely to attract subscription sales. More on this later.

The main difference between AS, SS and P5 is that AS now takes vertical video much more seriously. The main point is that on the AS site, verticals are displayed to the prospective buyer in their correct position - vertically. SS and P5 display verticals as horizontals, so prospective buyers will get neck ache trying to view them. Surely that's an easy fix, but neither SS nor P5 seem to be motivated to do so.

AS also took it seriously enough to suggest that contributors who had previously uploaded verticals, before AS got wise to the increased demand, suggested the old versions be deleted and re-uploaded via the new 'we're now very enthusiastic about verticals' regime. It's this which not only displays verticals properly, but there's an option for buyers to filter search results, whereby it only picks up those which are genuine vertical videos.

I assume that it's the dimensions of a given video within AS which causes it to be included in a filtered search for vertical video, so the results are very consistent, with page after page of correctly displayed clips. By comparison, the search results within SS and P5, should a buyer be looking for vertical videos, are all over the place. First of all, there's the daft horizontal display, when verticals should instead be displayed like portrait images. But the other main issue is that many of the search hits are actually normal landscape videos, which have been picked up by the vertical video search due to something or other in the title or keywords.

In short, SS and P5 don't take vertical seriously at all, whereas AS is actively pushing this format.

As for sales at AS, it has transpired that most vertical video sales are via subscription, so they sell for a few dollars apiece. Problem there is that most landscape video sales are like that now, so it's difficult to negatively conclude that the very nature of vertical video lends itself to casual buyers who are at the lower end of the market. What I would say, however, is that I've had a couple of 'normal' priced sales, and one was in 4k. This made me think that although the main market for verticals might indeed lean towards subscription sales, there's a lot of advertising on social media, so it's quite conceivable that companies in time will increasingly buy vertical video to ensure their presence on handheld devices. There's also plenty of scope for video to be displayed vertically on websites, so overall I'm optimistic it's a growing market, and just about worth investing time in producing for this format.

So, it's early days to make firm conclusions, but I've had numerous vertical video sales in 8 months - in fact, they're disproportionately higher than horizontals for the few hundred I have on AS. I think this is because verticals are a small fraction of the library, so buyers have nowhere near as much choice, so my own videos are more likely to sell at present.

As for shooting vertical video, some subjects lend themselves so much better to the format than horizontal. Anything tall and thin works well, though any camera movement has to be very precise. I often shoot the same subject both horizontally and vertically, either by moving objects around to suit both formats, and shooting twice, or by shooting overhead just the once, then simply using that single shot to suit both formats.

Some editing software has already made it easy to set a project in the vertical format, whereas other apps haven't yet joined the party, so it's more difficult, but still possible.

How P5 deals with vertical videos seems confused.

If I search "vertical video" I get mostly clips displayed in landscape format - but there are some shown vertically. Why the difference?

Note: In looking closer - if format is 1920x1080 its shown in landscape mode even if subject is captured vertically - if format 1080x1920 its displayed as vertical.

I had 2 video's approved couple days ago purposely shot in portrait/vertical mode HD 1080x1920. They are displayed in my account pages Upload "Clip details", etc. correctly as verticals.

However, in my storefront's Home page "Latest footage" they don't appear anywhere vertical or horizontal that I can find. Also they're not shown in the Collection to which I added them. Without looking thru my entire portfolio its not obvious that they are anywhere on my storefront.

If I search with specific title keywords that should return my verticals instead the search returns nothing.

I know P5 Curator's notes say it could take up to a week for clips to show up for sale on the site. It's usually taken no more than a day or so for new clips to show up on my storefront - until these verticals were approved.

NOTE: My 2 vertical clips showed up in my storefront and in search finally - took 4 days it seems.

I remember years ago P5 requested vertical videos when it was common to see vertical TVs in stores .... but as you all say many are displayed in horizontal position except a rare few like this one which I found using vertical video format: https://www.pond5.com/stock-footage/item/208434591-crocodile-eye-macro-stock-video-clip-vertical-format-video-4

Search for vertical video format yields a result of 9k+ where not all of them are vertical.

So, I am left wondering if I should up-load my verticals in AS ....

Neat that the recent iteration of Resolve has a proper vertical rendering setting. Will be uploading a few and testing the waters.

So handy that the extra plate on my tripod acts as a ledge .. so I can pull the cam and do verticals without remounting. Although I suppose if I want typical social media crapola I need to add camera shake. I'd have to laugh if a faux-shake vertical clip sold first.

If verticals were really getting to be a thing one would think that P5 would add a "vertical format" to the footage search Filters.

I am going to start a collection of verticals with the goal of reaching 1k clips. I shoot at 5.7k .... so no need to tilt the camera.
