Editing software for the intermediate level

I'm using the $29.99/month for After Effects. I chose this because at some point midsummer I am going to have to pack up my machines and monitors and won't have the ability to take advantage of the lower yearly deal. It's pretty painless, but in the long run it's not a great deal.

Almost every vendor out there has a 30 day trial for their software. Use it! I'm wishing the HitFilm Ultimate folks get back to me soon - my computer does not like their installer, but from what I've seen of their online tuts, it's a pretty cool program.

The best value I have found is Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum $129 does everything you need.

I bought the introductory offer of Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum $124 without the audio editor but with Hitfilm 2 Express. Hitfilm 2 Express is limited to export to AVI, MP4 (20 mbs), and PNG Image sequence. It does not export to MOV and the pro version also does not export to MOV (I asked them). So I have to export to AVI and then convert with another program to .MOV. It's a simple program to do simple things with Youtubers in mind. I do not plan to download the pro version at this time.

I just bought (Sony) Movie Studio Platinum 12 Suite 64bit, which included DVD Architect Studio, Magic Bullet Looks 64bit, New Blue FX3D Titling & Video Effects and Sound Forge Audio Studio. It exports everything as the pro program does, In .mov photojpeg, opens up Canon and Panasonic native files, a great value for $124.95 no tax!

Adobe has only managed to stir up the market. After all, it is a good thing: we get more choices and more fair prices.

I bought the offer for the Visual Effects Suite: Having used CS4, I was amazed by how many features this inexpensive program offers.

Market share is and will continue to move out of Adobe to other choices.

around 2006, I tested every video editing package at $100 and less, and Sony Vegas was the clear winner at that price point. there was no other software that came close. however it took a long time to figure out how to render to the best quality settings, because of interpolation, codecs, progressive scans, etc.

although there is something that is somewhat new called openshot that I think is free, and works on multiple platforms.
