IBP vs All- Intra

LUXORPYRAMID 12 May 2013 02:33
For those interested: I took a few All-Intra and IPB clips this afternoon at 30p and All-Intra clips were +- 38 % bigger than IPB.

and GH3 users should see this. GH3's can record at shutter speeds lower than 30 fps.

I think the GH3 was definitely built for the video shooter. It has features the Canon products lack.

Most of the magic lantern options are built in from the factory.

Shot at 1920x1080 - IPB 50 mbs / 30p but camera shutter speed was 15 fps iso 400 f4.1 (lens: 14-42 / 3.5-5.6). Focused using "area focus" placed on the closest candle.
This is an imposible shot with the T2i using an equivalent lens without raising ISO significantly with noise all over.

The 60D was on offer for $661. So far I do not regret spending the extra $639 for the GH3. I only wish the GH3 had focus peaking.

Seems the very best quality out of this little camera is 24p All-Intra but I do not shoot 24p.

Little, yes, you won't impress anybody with this camera.

Just far too much invested in Canon L Lenses.

BlackMagic 4k Cinema Camera is for Canon lenses. On the contrary, you have the advantage.
Your MKIII All-Intra is over 92 mbs, GH3 is only 72 mbs. GH3 HDMI out is 4.2.0 ; yours is now 4.2.2.

The advantage of the GH3 over the MkIII is price and size (i.e. a tourist size camera).

Using a faster lens on a T2i you won't need to use a shutter speed lower than 1/30 (of course you can't below 1/30) nor an ISO above 100. These were not taken using Magic Lantern just a stock T2i. Here are two examples.

Shutter 1/30 f2 ISO 100 30mm prime

Shutter 1/60 f2 ISO 100 30mm prime

My point is that you can do a lot more with a slow inexpensive lenses if you have a camera that can shoot at shutter speeds below 24p plus the fact that the 4/3 is a smaller sensor. And I wanted to test if the Youtube video was true. Below a shutter speed of 15 fps you start getting to much motion blur. That is only good if you want to create a surreal effect.

And I'm so happy with the GH3, I gave all my T2i stuff to my son. Canon Rebels bye, bye.

Remember bit rate is subjective. All I-frame codecs CAN look really crappy. As in long GOP HDV at 25Mb/s 4:2:0 looks the same as All-I ProRes LT at around 100 Mb/s 4:2:2! IN some cases, where motion was involved, it was better.

Sadly, I discovered this after committing to ProRes LT 422 for a lot of footage that is now all garbage. And for most of it did not run tape (I was "saving disc space" and somehow forgot to run tape as backup)

In some cases, both HDV and AVCHD are beautiful, efficient codecs, and if their bit rate was higher, all else remaining the same, they'd be awesome. XDCAM 50 is related, I believe, and from what I've seen, is badass.

So depending on what is being shot, change the codec to suit. File sizes go up REALLY quickly, and sometimes there is little or no difference in detail resolution and color. This is from an 8-bit camera though, so take that info how you like. Transcoding from AVCHD to even the standard PJPEG or better allows for more push/pull in post.

The PIX220 can now shoot ProRes 4444. Yikes. Would have to be VERY specific in what was shot. That's about 26 minutes on a 160 GB SSD. For stock? From an 8-bit camera? I dunno...seems like a lot of the old "bestsellers" are shot on lesser cameras with lesser codecs. Content is king. Not so sure the huge hit in storage space (+ backup) would be worth it in most cases. Same thing with the RAW shooting. There's always bigger and better. Sure would like it now and then though.

I'm stuck with Canon lenses too, for now. Considering aiming toward a smaller body, not necessarily the MkIII, and I hate the T2i, so that's why I read into this thread about the GH3. It's a ways off though. The BMC variations are still a possibility. I don't mind having a GH3 and a few basic lenses for it if it came to it, so it's interesting Mr. Cinecameratv is having such a good time...congrats!

TEST - I am uploading the original All-Intra .MOV to Pond5. I want to see if direct camera All-Intra files are accepted. This is another "nightmare shot" if I use the T2i. The swivel screen and touch screen focus made this shot easy. I have to say that the screen can be seen much more clearly than the T2i under a very bright sun. Loving this little "travel" camera.

is this baby caterpillar one from the GH3?
