Vasiko Machabeli was born in Tbilisi, Georgia to a family of musicians. His father was a singer and guitar player, and his mother was a choir conductor. When he was 4 years old, his parents had a famous Georgian composer and professor at the Tbilisi State Conservatoire over for dinner.
