Contender for the 5d?

JHDT_Productions 3 Mar 2009 18:57
Panasonic announced a new DSLR that shoots Full HD 1080 at 24p or 720 at 30p

Also has full manual control-----
"DMC-GH1 also features a Creative Movie mode, which lets the user set the shutter speed and aperture manually to make even more impressive movies. "

Swivel LCD display
On camera stereo mike.
Auto focus during movie.

Sensor seems a little smaller then the 5d though and there isn't much info as to when it will be released or price.

Nikon better get on the ball or everyone will have a full HD DSLR.

That is cool, I like the swivel view displays a lot.
They are answering all the demand for 24p and changable shutter too.

For me If I was able to purchase either camera, I would still pick the 5d though, but then again I don't care much about user friendliness.

looks like the sensor size is equal to 16mm film (or Red One camera)

Very nice, I like the red color. Four thirds sensor size is the same format as Olympus cameras. Anybody know if the lens mount is common to any other manufacturers?

I told you they would come. I will wait to pass judgement on this one untill I see both still and video results. This is probably why Canon is going to do a manual mode. I seriously doubt its because users have been complaining or they would have done something sooner. If they dont the 5D will fall by the wayside.

I have never been a fan of Panasonic DSLR's they just dont hold a candle to Nikon or Canon. As for there three CCD video cameras they just dont hold up to the compition (Except for a couple of the Pro end cameras). The HV30 has a better video image than some of the Pro panasonic cameras.

Its really a shame as in the old days if you wanted a quality VHS camcorder you got a Panasonic. I think my first 4 camcorders were all Panasonic.

What does "four thirds" mean?
Normstock 4 Mar 2009 14:17
Hi Jake, four thirds is the dimension of the sensor, the same idea as a tv screen 16:9...........so the four thirds sensor (4:3) is three units of measure high and four measures of units long. This is format pioneered by Olympus cameras. 35mm format is a 3:2 format as an example.

Thanks Norman,
Sounds very inovative.

I found out a little more about the camera. Not a release date but as I thought it will be priced about a thousand lower then the canon. If it takes off that may be a queue for Canon to drop their price.

Nice Jake thanks for the link, if that price is close it would be an amazing deal

In addition to Motion JPEG images, the DMC-GH1 can record high-resolution full-HD 1920 x 1080 movies at 24 fps (frames per second) or smooth HD 1280 x 720 movies at 60 fps in AVCHD (MPEG-4/H.264)* format.

Does this mean it records in uncompressed .mov?
Normstock 4 Mar 2009 17:50
On the camera body it has AVCHD so that is the compression used in Blue Ray for high def tape less recording
