Premiere CC, AE CC, PJPEG Render Gamma issue?

PictureLake 9 Sep 2015 23:18
I've been using AE for so long, and it's so easy to do what I know how to do, I'm reluctant to switch.

However, this may have put me over the edge. Perhaps it's time I try out DaVinci Resolve 12. I've heard good things about it, and free is a very good price.

I'm not smart enough for Resolve. I should know ... I've tried it twice.

Ha! I couldn't even get that far. I installed it, but then learned that I don't have the proper OpenCL version installed. I've been spending the last few hours now trying to recover from my attempt to update my GPU driver in order to get OpenCL 1.2. No luck yet.

But looking at the documentation, it definitely looks foreboding.

I'm working with Resolve 11 (not lite) full time and I can say it's really good and worth the learning curve. I use AE CC for compositing and Premiere CC only for finishing nowadays. Version 12 has some quirks with CUDA & OpenCL driver but it still BETA therefore Im using 11 until final 12 comes out.

No gamma shifts here! That only happens if you mess up with VIDEO vs. DATA levels (16-235 vs. 0-255). Im using BMD's MiniMonitor via HDMI/SDI out to a calibrated TV (not computer monitor) that works perfectly.

I'm going to have to wait until I get a new computer (in a few months), because I don't think my current graphics card is going to work with Resolve (11 or 12).

After re-reading this thread, I'm not certain the problem I'm seeing is exactly the same as described here (I made it through the first 3 pages). Clips in CC are brighter and more contrasty, which sounds a bit like the opposite of what the problem was like last year.

I tried the solid color layer idea. I created a layer that was 12,206,12, and rendered it as PJPEG. Instead of 12,206,12, it was rendered as 27,239,27! Huh. I also tried Prores, which got me close enough (12, 205, 11). So there's definitely still a problem with PJPEG, but I don't know if it's the same problem.

Sadly, I must report The Issue is still alive and well. Rendering deep forest misty redwoods aerials....playing back the rendered pjpeg shows less contrast and shift in greens (the predominant color) and this TOTALLY FREAKING SUCKS.

Due to my own limitations, the only way around this for me is to render out to Uncompressed AVI, then import into 4K Footage Studio, and then export that to ProRes HQ. This adds yet another step, which is sometimes OK< but usually not, and it really slows me down.

What a PITA.

Miz I haven't followed most of this thread, but why not go straight to prores
Mizamook 12 Sep 2015 05:20
Cuz I've got a PC based workflow. No way to render to PR from AE for me. Damned Apple.

there was the miraizon codec to do it. not sure if you can still get it.

I bought it, and the upgrade but found it made my footage soft. I'm happy with the way things turn out exporting to AVI uncompressed then to ProRes HQ from 4K Footage Studio, but annoyed at the process. Especially since in some cases I already had to transcode using Footage Studio in the first place. Three steps. Phooey.
