I design, for the most part, 3D particle simulations using mostly Autodesk 2012 3ds Max with FumeFx. I always jump into Adobe After Effects 2020 to edit and export my explosions to have an alpha channel so you can use it in any kind of video project, they're usually compatible with any Video Editor that can use .mov or QuickTime video files with "Screen" functions.
