VIDEO SPECS UPDATE

I seldom go to see what's new in P5's video requirement rules but I see that they have done mayor changes. (new P5 version)

1) Iphones are officially on the accepted list.: "iPhone4s and above (at full quality)"

2) file size has increased dramatically: "3 to 120 seconds, and no larger than 2 GB (2000 MB)".
I guess they are getting ready for those big 4k prores files.

Wow my clips lenght are about 12-15 seconds and from what I have seen, buyers use not more than 4 seconds.

I am worried about the Iphone thing, since many of us are investing quite a lot on new pro equipment and here in Pond5 it is not a requirement to say what camera you used.

Newbies can now buy an Iphone 4+ and that's it. They may think that thay are now professionals.

I am far from being a "pro" and would never consider using Iphones to sell videos.

mobile videography/imagery is a different kind but not a competitor to the pro media, it has a different aesthetics. There are certain things one can do with a mobile but not with a pro camera. I would not worry that much. If you wanna get on that niche simply use your smartphone :)

Under the proper circumstances (and when in the right hands), iPhone videos are quite good. I even have plenty pass the rigid IS reviewers.

This one is an example. Although it's hard to tell from the preview, the quality is quite decent.

I can see why iPhone for spur of the moment critical editorial. I sure hope they start enforcing the artist putting in and leaving the camera make and model so buyers are aware of what they are getting. 1920x1080 HD are not all the same. The sensor, lens and processor is far more important determining quality than the marketing hype from Apple or Samsung or any of the cell phone makers. So what about Samsung Galaxy III or 4. There are far more non-Apple smart phones in the world and being sold now yet the Apple hype just won't die.

ODesigns; the difference is that you show the source camera. The buyer knows what he is buying. You also have to consider that there are millions of Iphones out there and you are opening the door to all of them plus the fact that this is not IS and that P5 tends to accept many clips that other agencies reject. I prefer the position: "If you have an outstanding clip taken with an Iphone we may accept it"

Millions of iPhones (or similar), yes. Does the curation here weed out the bad submissions? That's the more important question.

Actually ODesign's clip is pretty frickin' awesome. Think about the cameras available just a few years back. Or even in the old SD days. They were nowhere near the quality of the new smartphone tech. My take is that there are times when something is happening where you simply only may have a smartphone handy. The shot may be worth a ton due to its content or due to an event that simply couldn't have been captured as it was happening. Think 9/11 New York, or the recent Boston incident. Any and all footage from these events are truly historical. I don't think anyone is going to care on what it was shot on. They want or need the content period. I do disagree however along the lines of making a smart phone the 1st unit. Or the only tool used to shoot stock. That is just bogus.

Thanks, Andy. It was an unplanned and lucky shot. All I had handy was my phone to capture it. Like you said, my phone is a last resort option.

"Does the curation here weed out the bad submissions?" Well, I made an experiment and here the clip was accepted.

You have a great aerial clip but that is not the issue here. I think the phrase "If you have an outstanding clip taken with an Iphone we may accept it" is a better way to say it.

As Vader said once; maybe they will accept a complete black background video with the title
"panorama taken with lens cap on".

But this is not the point either. I think P5 should in some way make it clear that low end cameras are the exemption and not the rule; unless off course if they start building 5D MK III's with integrated cell phones.
