MJPEG-B not accepted codec any more?

Since P5 stated ProRes is the future and by uploading MJPEG or PJPEG lower sales should be expected; I guess that answered our question. If this is so we all really need P5 to step up with some automatic conversions to ProRes???

I think that maybe P5 is thinking of reducing the storage cost per gigabyte. More than a year ago h.264 was not accepted. Months a ago it was accepted because members wanted to reduced their upload time and home storing space and not because buyers were asking for h.264. (I was one of them) H.264 was accepted but placed at the bottom of the list. Now h.264 is on the top of the list. I do not think that having MJPEG or PJPEG files are going to affect sales. Personally, I have bad luck with mov/h.264 files. Now uploading Pjpeg files but with 10 to 12 seconds duration instead of 20 to 30 seconds. I think that now that P5 is reaching 1,000,000 clips they are looking more seriously at their storage cost.

I think I remember that StockMediaPro begun marketing .h264 files and then change to advertise Pjpeg files. But they are constantly changing, Now I see that fellow member Boscorelli is running their video galleries.

P5 reference:

"We accept the following codecs:
• H.264: We accept H.264 when it's the camera's native HD format or as a broadcast quality export. If it's a high-quality encode at native resolution and framerate, it's fine. If it's a fast export out of quicktime with no regard to the settings of the original file, it will be rejected.
• ProRes 4:2:2: 1:1 export with native framerate and resolution, with as little compression as possible. (Please note: upon upload, we will automatically generate a H.264 proxy for your file, for buyers who do not use Apple codecs)
• PhotoJPEG: for non-DV clips, including HDV720p. Quality level of “high” (75%) or better (please do not go above 95%, in order to keep file sizes reasonable)."

Statement from P5:
"just spoke with Javier at Pond5 -- he explained that buyers are not favoring MJPEG-B any more... that if two similar clips are MJPEG-B and ProRes, the buyer will usually choose the ProRes.

Also, they're favoring new codecs, because they deliver better quality, and camera native when possible.

He explained that if I have an established workflow with MJPEG-B I could still use it, but to be honest, if it's going to hurt my sales to do so, I'm happy to start using ProRes instead. "

So any argument about storage or any other factor is not applicable to the question being asked. We appreciate comments from others on why they think, but the fact is, P5 stated that MJPEG or possibly PJPEG will result in lower sales than ProRes.

This is a big and important piece of information from P5 that affects hundreds of artists and tens of thousands of clips or even hundreds of thousands of footage clips.

P5 is one of the new changes coming up auto format options for buyers? If so will this issue then be mute?

The best way to save on storage is delete all the junk and massive duplications.

In that case then members should press P5 to auto-convert mjpg files into prores.
I only have a few mov/mjpg-b, many mov/h.264, not so many mov/pjpg, and a handfull of mp4/h.264 . Uploading to other sites will be a hassle.

unfortunately MJPEG and PJEG are standards that are accepted everywhere. Sure hope P5 can help with auto conversion to ProRes to meet the P5 buyers needs and wants. Maybe it's not possible?

Would be nice to hear something from p5 about this. Hope they will finally make the script that buyers can choose their own format. Revo has a really nice system.

I have decided to upload a few of my NTSC New York aerials as H.264 files and did a bit of curves correction in AE.

I know I can request the files to be linked, but these look so much nicer (to me) - any way that these can be used for the previews rather than the original files?

If P5 is looking to move towards ProRes and H.264 then maybe if both exist the newer codec version should be the one used for the preview?

It appears as though Pond5 has chosen to no longer interact with the forums. I'd PM them.

other sites are auto converting, it can't be impossible.

Dave, they have to be reading this stuff... I hope so.

Auto converting is not that difficult - it's a matter of scripting. Other sites do it everyday, and I'm sure that P5 will proceed on a mass scale, if and when it's feasible / appropriate

ProRes is the future, get used to it! The quality is second to none, and now that Pond5 has it, I'll be uploading here again :)

and dapoota, - I'm sure that they are reading, however, I've tried to say it many times... many people here need to step back and take a look at their posts.

Some of you start fires everyday that are just needless... constant complaining, refusal to understand trends change, and sometimes sales are slow - or you just don't have the clip people need.

And yet, the artists that are selling the most are never here complaining, making comparisons, etc. They are just working and selling.

We have the best pay scale, one of the best back-ends ever devised, access to stats that will help you make a bunch of money, yet the same group is NEVER satisfied.

Everyone has to prioritize, including us. And whom among you would want to spend your time on these forums dealing with the same old dead issues vs. keeping your head down and proceeding with the work at hand that will propel you into the future?

The Pond5 database / system is an extremely complex piece of work - that I challenge any of you to do a better job at!

Give'em a break - nothing is perfect.
