Codec confusion!

Good solid answer. Since most of us crop the ends, do a little color, contrast etc adjustment in post, then h.264 is not a good option here at P5. So for most of us PJPEG is still the answer since ProRes is still too Apple propriety and not windows friendly.

ProRes is a bad solution and I would not buy it. I am not producing for only the Mac market.

For video shot on the 5D, photo jpeg looks much worse than .mov/h264, when processed and exported from an editor. Pjpeg does odd stuff to the colors, and h264 looks like it did when it was shot.

An output format that is not proprietary to an editing software needs to be selected. Avid owns dnxhd and FC owns ProRes.

Can we pick one that is not proprietary? I will not edit in a format just to endorse a software, and it wont help sell clips.

I would buy H264 before I bought either of these.

As wildwater said, it just needs to be processed at 100%. The file size will be slightly larger than original, but not vastly larger, like if you did pjpeg at 100%. It actually has a lot less problems with my stuff from a 5d M2, maybe because that camera's native format.

I have no problems with h264 as intermediate codec, and will see how it sells. The fact that it is cross compatible to windows and mac, as well as all editing software, makes it more sensible to me.

I echo your thoughts on proprietary codecs Physics, it can be a real pain in the butt. So I have a quick question, since I use Edius editor on a PC which codec should I use for interlaced footage, PhotoJPEG?

These are my settings for converting from AVCHD MTS to MOV

I use adobe after effects CS5

Original:
codec: h.264 format: MTS
1920x1080
50 Interlaced

Ouput:
Codec: Photo-jpeg
Format: MOV
1920x1080
50 Progressive
Quality: 95%
render at maximum depth
Square pixels.
Optional: Add remove grain effect

I've used other converting programms but this works the best for me.
I don't see the rolling shutter effect, which I've had with other converting programms.
Quality is as good as the original file

Is there a way to replace my oldest clips ( which had some lost quality ) for the better rendered file, without changing the date uploaded and keywords etc.

H.264 vs PhotoJpeg

I am no expert but I have never seen super top sellers like Yofitofu use H.264 .
SimpleIconic 6 Feb 2012 14:31
I am not against photojpeg, I am just saying if the source file is a h.264, like the 5d, the end file looks better as an h264.

Check it yourself, the color banding in a pjpeg from a canon 5d is worse. There are also sometimes blocky color areas where detail has disintegrated.

If I do a time lapse, it is not so. A pjpeg looks better as a time lapse. If processed at correct settings.

Typhoon, I honestly don't have a lot of experience for interlaced, but I did shoot with a Sony A1U for a while, and Adobe AE 5.0 accounted for and by default fixed any of the lines if I exported as progressive. The only time there would be a problem is if I imported it without telling the software it was interlaced.

I have never used Edius before. I am sure you have a lot of experience, but I think that pjpeg may be best because h264 is not original file type. That is a guess though.

If H264 is the camera-native format, you can upload your unmodified H264 files, which will maintain the highest possible quality.

If you are color correcting, trimming, etc, and need to re-export your files, we prefer that you use ProRes, DNxHD, or high quality H264 for uploads. For H264, this means that the quality setting is set to "best", with all keyframes, and automatic bitrate.

We currently transcode all ProRes uploads to high quality H264, so when in doubt upload ProRes.

While we will continue to accept PhotoJPEG, it is lower quality and larger file size than the others, so it is not preferred.

@curator7,

Will the high quality H264 encode that you do be available as a selection along with the original ProRes clip on the clip's details page ?
