New JVC Cam for $5K shoots 4K Footage

Just like 3D, no real market yet. Might not hurt to be ready. It will be years before there is enough televisions that can display it to make it a viable option for stock. Heck, SD still sells good.

Come again? No real market yet? Are you kidding? Lots of productions for the film industry are being shot at full 4k! Red has set a marketplace and now the rest of the cam mfg's are coming in. Why, because it makes for a heck of a lot more possibilities in post.

I agree it has tremendous capabilities, problem is there is few tv's in homes that can show the full quality. Now if P5 had a downsize program, then shooting in this quality makes a great deal of sense. The full up producers can buy it and the rest of the world could buy the 1080 HD or SD sizes. There is a lot of hype with the Red and others, the capture technology is currently surpassing the end user on a a large scale. That will change, people will over time will upgrade. Problem is a majority of home users have upgraded to flat screen HD tv's in the last couple years are are not willing to do an other upgrade yet. As producers if we can capture better quality it is a good thing ... if downsizes are available. If no downsizes are available then the 4K will not be a big stock seller for a while.

When higher end productions go into post.... the editor and colorist want ALL the DATA they can get in the footage..... it provides more latitude when they start 'pushing around those pixels'.

I think the selling point for us is not that the end user would have a real need for 4K footage but he would be able to crop what he needs to 1080
Just like buying a 21 megapixel photo and cropping what you want and deleting the rest.
I would hope any buyer here would at least know how to downsize or crop in his editor.

That would be the main reason I would want a 4K camera.
But I'm still waiting for the street price of the C300 which is supposed to be released Jan 17

Oh, I'm all for it and just waiting to decide which way to go also.

Just as an FYI - many 4K clips have sold over the last year right here on Pond5.

Here is one that MSNBC's documentary "Erasing Hate" purchased. They showed in regular old HD and did a slight pan and zoom on it. They could not have done that with a standard HD file.

and another one - don't know who bought it, but hey, it's 4K of more clouds. :)

Hmmm, would be interesting to see how the footage behaves when you try to color grade it using DaVinci and co.

If someone has test-footage let me know.

Remember that you can always buy the "little brother" the JVG CPX10 for $900, shoot a burst of 130 / 4k photos, put them in your 24p timelime and get 5.41 seconds of 4k video. (theorically)

Or maybe you can ask the GH2 hackers to do the same thing with the GH2. We only need about 10 seconds of 4k video.
