After I used a diy slider for a long time I purchased an motorized edelkrone and I don't regret it. I also designed my own foam inserts in CAD for it.

@OliverM you can put plastic bags over the electronics.

Oliver, north of France may be like Germany, sun is only shining when we are working in our main job ;)

@Beckhusen actually video is my main job. But the mud, dead trees and fog do not inspire me at all.
I'll be in the Alps in January to shot some 4k moving timelapse.

That's a sweet case there for the edelkrone.Im about to complete my shark motion control system with the pan and tilt head and will research a custom case for the motion control motor and the pan tilt unit.
Is that a peli case imitation btw?Any links to it?Seems very nice.

@Oliver Mud, fog and dead trees can be very inspiring. I have problem only with the flat grey sky without any living facettes.
Alps are great, you never can get enough of it!

Stefan,
This can be a good shot if you act in the movie--lost your way in the mist!

Understood about money and the value of DIY, low cost, etc. My fist slider was a DIY not very well machined, etc, and it had ... umm ... problems. But I got a few shots with it.... the hardest things with slider is to get shots that are not just boring "so what?" shots that happen to have a slider motion... make the slide make sense and say something.

Yes, agree that slider shots must make sense. I built my first motorized slider on an Igus rail. Worked pretty good but the weight kept me from carrying it very far in the field. My next one was a Shark slider. It was a piece of engineering art as well as giving ultra-smooth slides. Again it was to heavy for me to carry far. I sold both an got a close out price on a carbon Rhino slider that I am using now. It is really light-weight a gives good slides.

That's what i really mean, i will first see if i really use it and it will become a passion. If yes, then i can think about a professional one with coll motorized moves. For the moment i only enjoy to have got one which runs very smooth by hand job and weight is only a few more than 2kg.
More about this it surely depends where we are located and where we may use it mainly. In a big city with skyscrappers a motorized one is a must have and makes much sense. In the country and by hiking i don't think that it makes sense to put out much money only to get some more clouds timelapses, and also the weight to carry must be low as possible. I usually carry with me around 10kg, only for cameras, tripod, akkus, small tools and 2 motorized panorama heads. With additional slider i will be packed like a donkey ;)
