Codec confusion!

@Physics The problem with H264 is that some manufactures like Vegas do not recognize it as QT wrapper or even as a stand alone. Edius and AE recognizes QT H264 but it just bugs me that Sony doesn't.

@danielschweinert Photo-jpeg is preferred for progressive.

There is a good chance that Apple proprietary software, hardware and formats will start to be not as popular now the boss is gone AND the news is showing all the profits Apple has made from 100% Chinese manufacturing. I for one have never owned an Apple product nor will I. They tried to control the market by being so proprietary instead of a "team" player. They even realized that they finally had to move to PC type processors. They had a good run, I just trust it will not continue.

I edit on Edius and luckily have never had any problems with H264 and regularly supply it to clients who contact me independently. Edius is a great and versatile NLE editor.

Given the absence of a clear message from P5 I'll just stick with PhotoJPEG for my 30p footage.

Depending which camera the footage came I use both H264 and Photo-jpeg. When exporting out in Edius you're going directly to QT Pro where as Vegas doesn't give you that choice.

Yeah, I agree on not liking the apple proprietary bs. Never have and never will also. I agree that the apple proprietary stuff will end their business.

I don't know why, but footage from an .mov/h264 camera renders poorly to photo jpeg, so I render it back to h264. The time lapses I convert to photo jpeg and they look fine.

One thing for certain, there will be a lot more people that cant use Pro Res than h264.
EarthUncutTV 27 Feb 2012 07:42
Exactly Physics, hence I'll always supply files which everyone can use!

It'll be PhotoJPEG for me for the foreseeable future, since it's 100% compatible with everything, and is really the only format all agencies will accept.
vadervideo 28 Feb 2012 16:42
If I may - OD, that is somewhat incorrect. There are some fairly new agencies (2 years or less) that only accept H.264 - I am working with one now for testing.
ODesigns 28 Feb 2012 18:25
New agencies? They probably won't be around in 2 years. Many have tried and failed, and I tend to refuse to become associated with a new start-up these days. Not worth my time.

But that said, I realize more and more are taking H.264. And on my job, I mostly supply files in that format.

But since iS still won't accept them, it's PhotoJPEG for me.

Should these "new" agencies take root and change things, then I'll rethink my preparation procedure.

So let me rephrase my original statement: It'll be PhotoJPEG for me for the foreseeable future, since it's 100% compatible with everything, and is really the only format all agencies that matter will accept.
