Interlaced or Progressive?

Do you think buyers prefer one over the other?

Interlaced or Progressive?

What about 24p vs 30p?

What does everyone think?

Most of my HD has been normal USA standard 29fps interlaced. I do have some here a 24p and 30p. They are pretty new and have not sold yet. Maybe P5 can enlighten us on what they think. Many of us with advanced cameras can easily do 24p or 30p without converting. For European sales the 24p would be best but not sure that there are many sales going that way yet.
Tom, anyway to get a list of who the main buyers have been? We know Disney is one of them now.
Thanks,
Don

I come in contact with a lot of low level producers when working on independent films. Most of the films aren't even listed on imdb by the way (lol they are usually bad).. But when im on set I meet government film producers, visual effects artists, film school graduates, ad producers, wedding videographers, porn producers... and so on. (they all work in the indie film business as a hobby.) Most all of them seem to prefer progressive scan. Film is progressive, so I guess that is the 'gold' standard. I make my clips 29.97 progressive which I know seems kind of weird, but I do sell a lot.

In fact when you load HD footage in after effects it automatically deinterlaces it, and computer generations are formed progressively (in max or blender), so if you want them interlaced, you have to convert it.

I know I'm coming into this late but I just bought one of those 35mm DOF adaptors for my camera (actually have a couple online here now) and I thought of doing some 24 fps stuff to really get that film look.

But, I thought it is always best leave the final video interlaced if your camera shoots interlaced and progressive if your camera shoots progressive.

Is that the case or can I shoot 24fps and deinterlace the video without problems?

Thanks,
Jake

If your camera can shoot in 24p then it should be progressive, and you wont have to deinterlace it. Dependeing on how your camera works you may have to do pulldown etc. My camera has a "cineform" option where you can make it look like 24p but it comes out as 29.97, but you can change it to 24p with minimal quality loss, and it doesn't use the pulldown system. The only problem with doing 24p is that if you convert it to 29.97 some of the frames will have to be manufactured. But converting from 29.97 to 24p causes less quality loss because your editing program has more frames to work with.

I have the Sony HDR-FX1.
It has a cine mode which looks like 24p but I think its like yours it just looks that way but really is 29.
There are a lot of arguments about if it is or isn't actually 24p.
Well, I'll experiment with it. As you pointed out it may not be the best for stock so I'll just shoot at the regular 29.

Here are a couple of shots I did with the adaptor so far. I really like the shallow DOF.

Woah those are good, you keep getting better and better. You know I notice after every batch of clips I make, I look at my previous batch an think I could do that better... Its amazing how much experience everyone gains by doing this.

..., and so long as you sell a clip with you in it, that technically makes you a professional actor,,, lol, becasue you're getting paid to do it!

Thanks, I like doing video. It's really a creative outlet. I alway have done photography but this is really cool.

I guess I could tell people; I'm not an actor, I play one on stock. LOL

Anyway Mark, I'm using you as inspriation. My goal is to do a sci-fi indi film. Of course I wouldn't steal your idea of saving a water heater from the aliens. :-)

When I saw this big fan I had to shoot it, it just looked like a part of a sci-fi scene.

Sweet! Thats cool, I would like to make films too, I have the connections but I think I still need more experience, and I was thinking about getting the scarlet RED camera next year. BTW that screentest was for a short film, we were going to make it longer and submit it to festivals, but unfortunately my friends I work with usually arent as self-disciplined as I am, and they don't work very hard to finish projects. :( A lot of people just want to be famous and they don't realize how much work it is, I personally don't care about fame at all.
