Sony RX-10 II

Thanks for these insights everyone!

Wish they hadn't made the RX100 IV specs look so similar to the RX10 II. This really complicates my decision! The AX100 remains my 'run and gun' camera, that much I know. But either of these new models could be a good replacement for my GH4 (which I've been using as a spare camera for the most part). It seems like it's mainly a matter of small size (RX100 IV) versus decent zoom range & easy use of external filters (RX10 II). Footage coming out of these two cameras appears to be similar.

For true run and gun style ax100 still seems to be a superior camera, form factor and all.
Rx10 has a more "cinematic" image (if someone needs one) while maintaining some of that videocamera-ish controls but not quite.
Can't be hand held unfortunately and it will need at least a monopod to get rid of that dslr wrist jitter, but i suppose that in the near future more stuff will come out for it and you will be able to "cage" it for more serious productions.Having audio is huge.

You can also film a concert, speech or event with it as an A camera, you cant do any of these with the 100 even as B cam.
If i can match it with the C100 for b-roll corporate stuff i'll be a happy man.

Rx100 i have no idea what this is other than a VERY nice stills camera that can take a nice video image on the fly if need be.
Could be good for stock (and not much else) but the 24-70 lens is a no go for me.
Gh4 with metabones and a nice canon zoom lens is still unbeatable. For naked gh4 i would propably use the rx10 too for stock especially for editorial/news stuff.

Shit im promoting Sony all of a sudden....

Yes, the RX10 is a proper replacement for the GH4 and a decent backup camera if something happens to the AX100. The small RX100 would mostly be an extra camera to put in my pocket and use in tight/difficult situations (metro stations, supermarkets, airports etc).

Your GH4/Canon combination is probably superior to either of these cameras, but the sensor dust, lens changes, and external ND filters are too much of a drawback for me.

Well, you're promoting Sony for a reason. They seem to make the best (or at least most surprising) prosumer cameras these days...

Wow, reading all these comments almost makes me feel bad for really digging in on mine functionality wise. I shot some awesome slow-mo stuff already with this thing. And that is really the only real use I planned for it. But it seems everything else is just fine and dandy as well. I am still running it through its paces, but I gotta say, what I am hearing here sounds more as if people want to use this for stuff it's not designed for. Oh well.

Hello Vader,
I just want to know if it is just as good as a GH4 or AX100 in 4k under a good sun on a modest tripod filming city life from a sidewalk. No interviews, no tv ad filming, no studio work. I want to carry only a tripod, a camera and a bottle of water.

Is it 24mm wide-angle when use as video camera ??

Cincameratv,

When you want to use it as travel camera like mine, Panasonic FZ1000 is not a bad choose at all. 25-600mm f2.8-f4. And it is much cheaper, at least in EU.

On the ND all I did was point the camera at a scene meter on manual until I got the correct f stop then activated the ND and the meter then read -2EV.

I see.I'll try to test as soon as i get a camera, thanks.

After testing the sony more, I am still pleased with it for video, but wouldn´t recommend it as a primary stock photo camera, or if you do, make sure you have good additional light. The minute you go indoors, the camera goes iso800 or more and it is a small sensor camera which you can see. That would be one reason to go for the a7 2, but my budget doesn´t allow that at the moment.

But if the light is good, then you can take good enough quality stills from the film, which is really helpful. I downsize these to 6 MP to improve quality a little, but the footage is definitely a good source for more photo material.

On the rx10ii I was down sizing the pics to 6MP also to submit to stock. I never shot any pics for stock with my ax100, but I imagine they are similar to the rx10.

I really did enjoy the feel of having a dslr again, I love taking photos and that gets lost when shooting with my ax100.

Looking at the P900 from Nikon, can't get my hands on one! That zoom is amazing!
