When a strip is dipped into 0.1 M hydrochloric acid (HCl), its color changes to red indicating a strongly acidic solution. When another strip is dipped into 0.1 M sodium hydroxide (NaOH), its color changes to dark blue indicating a strongly alkaline solution.
