By 1931, near Vitebsk, off the banks of the Western Dvina, dolomite deposits were explored and a lime plant was founded. From that moment on, quarries began to appear near it for the extraction of useful minerals in construction, and later in agriculture.
Some of the quarries have now already been mined out and flooded, and the largest active dolomite development site has become the Gralevo deposit in Ruba. The quarry has been growing since the 70s of the last century. Having several interconnected sections, it stretches for 2.5 kilometers. And the depth in some places reaches 45 meters. One of the banks of Gralevo is accessible to the public: mining on the southern side of the quarry is no longer underway, and if you walk across the field, you can easily take a look here.
