Description:
Multi-Axis Test Facility, Space Progress Report, November 1, 1959: The Multi Axis Space Test Inertia Facility (MASTIF), informally referred to as the Gimbal Rig, was installed inside the Altitude Wind Tunnel, Lewis Research Center, Cleveland, Ohio. The rig, which spun on three
axis simultaneously, was used to train the Mercury astronauts on how to bring a spinning spacecraft under control and to determine the effects of rapid spinning on the astronaut's eyesight and psyche. Small gaseous nitrogen jets were operated by the pilot to gain control of the rig after it had been set in motion. Pilot Joe Algranti is secured in the rig which is set in motion and the pilot slowly brings it under control. The Mercury astronauts trained on the MASTIF in early spring of 1960.
