There's a whole lot of shaking going on as Costa's Hummingbird (Calypte costae) chicks try to keep cool in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, California. The viewer sees an unusual CU of two chicks engaging in "gular fluttering," a flapping of membranes in the throat with the bill open. This increases evaporation and is said by some to be more efficient than sweating as a mechanism for cooling off. Gular fluttering usually is more easily seen in sea birds such as boobies, cormorants, pelicans and the like. This video clip comprises the only time in more than 15 years of shooting hummingbirds that this artist has seen and captured this behavior.
