Description:
Iguazu Falls is the most famous set of falls in South America, and perhaps the world. Dwarfing Niagara Falls in New York by a factor of fifty, Iguazu is actually a system of 275 falls along almost two miles of the Iguazu River. Splitting the river into Upper and Lower sections, the falls are up to 269 feet in height, with most being between 175 and 215 feet high. The falls are actually moving upstream, as most falls do, with the basalt underlayment that supports them being worn away by about a tenth of an inch per year. Bordering Brazil and Argentina, 350,000 to 400,000 gallons of water per second flow over the falls. Miles of hiking trails are available, as are speedboat tours of the area. An island in the center of the falls is host to a rocky beach, but gets few visitors, so is usually serene, except of course for the deafening roar of the surrounding water.
