Peat Bog Landscape
The areas De Wieden and De Weerribben together constitute the National Park Weeribben-Wieden. Before De Weerribben and De Wieden received the status of nature reserve, the area was an important source of peat. The long strips of land where the peat was harvested are called "petgaten", and these provide a good base for a rich variety of plants and animals. Swamp areas like the National Park Weerribben-Wieden are rare in Europe.

large herbivores
Biotope conservation with large herbivores. Since the 1980s, Highland cattle is used for natural grazing in Dutch Nature reserves. They graze, browse and eat plants which many other cattle avoid. Icelandic horses are used to clear the heathland in Veluwezoom National Park. They even eat the prickly gorse, using its teeth to strip off the leaves carefully. Dutch Blaarkop cattle have few problems with natural barriers which makes it suited for grazing in (wet) nature reserves, such as stream valleys.
