Combining Multiple Resolutions into One Details Page

ODesigns 26 Apr 2013 13:19
As the Pond5 library grows, I really think the issue of multiple resolutions and frame rates needs to be addressed.

In my own searches (I'm also a buyer here), I see many clips rendered out multiple times. While I don't have a problem with this as it gives the buyer more options, I really feel all these download options should be combined into ONE file details page.

As it is now, if clips are separate, a clip that is rendered in 1080, 720, and NTSC, (or more), each one has it's own unique ID number, and as a result, shows up individually in searches. This, of course, artificially increases a producer's portfolio, and each one of those clip versions has a better chance of getting seen in any given search from a buyer.

If this continues, the searches will only get diluted even further.

I am systematically going through my older files and asking for my multiple renders of the same subject be combined (I no longer render out multiple versions in the hopes that Pond5 someday makes this automatic at the time of purchase). While this is a tedious process, I think it should be a required step. Perhaps Pond5 could automate this process during clip submission, or just not permit multiple versions until a solution is made.

Thoughts? Bear in mind, I only have a problem of the SAME clip rendered MULTIPLE times, not SIMILAR clips shots INDIVIDUALLY (but that, too, is a bit much in my opinion, but I digress...).

I agree 100% about such page.
One problem I can see is the price. I did not combine clips on P5 together for a long time but I noticed that there was a single price for any size of the clip - it is a 4K or 720p. What is not good.
The best approach for setting price for different sizes of the same clip is on RS.

I think now Pond5 puts a "range" of prices in the hover on combined videos like they do on stills now.

Right? I know I've seen it.

EDIT:
Here's an example of my own combined clips in a search:

Pittsburgh 4K

Many of those videos come in 2 resolutions but are on ONE details page. I could have easily let them be separate and have "twice" as many clips, but I think that's wrong.

OK. I see there are different prices for different sizes of the clips. So, I'll try to use this 'combine clips' option.
How about combining 3D stereoscopic clips into one page? Usually there are more than one format of 3D stereoscopic clips combined into one page.

Indeed, the P5 portfolio is really inflated in numbers by tens or hundreds of thousands. Between different sizes there also different frame rates and codex/package differences. I can see this would be frustrating to buyers getting a page of the same footage with changes described.

RS is good in that the artist has full control and can set pricing on the different sizes ... we need that ability on the photo side also.

Hello,

So this is a combination of the artists notifying us when clips need to be associated together, as well as the curators seeing and recognizing when clips need to be associated.

The best thing we can do going forward is to be as aware of these similar clips as we can be while curating. And on the artists' end, if you've got any clips that need to be associated, please include a note with your submissions to the curators. You can also email us at contact@pond5.com. That way we have double the chance of making sure they get associated and we don't have an aggressive amount of similar clips online together being sold separately.

In all honesty, however, I'd say about 80% of uploads are individual clips, maybe even 90%. Very few "versioned" clips are coming in. It's a small percentage, but still an important thing to keep in mind. I'll make sure this is passed on to our curators!

Thanks, as always, for the discussion. You guys are awesome.

Cheers,

Ryan

How does a contributor get multiple resolution files combined on the same page?

I added detailed notes to the curator with the relevant uploads during submission during my previous upload batch (approved April 27th). These notes were overlooked by the curator.

Sent a detailed message to Pond5 later that day, with all relevant information. On April 29 I received a message back that the request will be forwarded to the "associations department". Those files are still not associated.

Another batch of files approved today (very fast review time I might add, thanks!). Again, added a detailed note to curator on every relevant file with clip ID #'s, etc. These notes were overlooked.

However, the curator did notice that there were multiple files of the same clip with different resolution, because they attached a note to me. From Curator 22: "Hi, same clips with different resolutions can be associated so we would encourage you to send a clip association request via e-mail to contact@pond5.com giving the ID numbers of clips to be associated. It applies to your previously uploaded clips as well."

Shouldn't it be taken care of during curation as stated above? How long should I expect the association process to take? Did they forget, and do I keep sending duplicate emails to request this? Is there a way to give the uploader more control over this? Should I just relax and let them be separate?

Thanks.

80-90% is pretty significant. That mean there are about a quarter million duplicates (in different sizes) that buyers have to wade through. Indeed a small portion are grouped together and probably better now than in the past.

I, too, am awaiting some of my recent submissions to be combined by the "associations department." I think if Pond5 doesn't take combining resolutions seriously, then perhaps they should not permit them in the first place.

Atomazul and ODesign's, please email me with your clip ID #'s at ryan@pond5.com. I will associate them for you. I have contacted our curators and will make sure they are looking out for these emails/notes.

Thanks,
