Longer Clips Wanted: Approx 2-5 minutes in length

steelcanyon 9 Jan 2009 22:32
Hey all. First time posting here. I will do my best not to break any protocols.

I have a client that wants to travel around the world in 90 minutes. Let's just say we are taking a very quick walk. We are looking for clips from 2min-5min in length, ranging from all climates/altitudes, and from one extreme to another.

First, (directed to Pond 5) is this something that could be offered?

Second, (artists) would anyone be willing to sell that length of footage through Pond 5 and at what price?

I will not mention the exact shots we are looking for at the moment, as I do not want to over step bounds with Pond 5 and it's community.

Please let me know.

Regards,

Erik

I think once we hear what Pond5 has to say, you may well get many responses. But you are being very fair in allowing Pond5 to work on this first. Hence, we all must wait to be fair to our extremely diligent Stock Footage Marketplace handlers. :)

I agree with vadervideo on this. Should you get approval from pond5, my contact information can be found on my profile.

My guess is P5 will be happy ... but ...they probably don't want to open the door to receiving lots of very large footage files unless they are specifically needed. Special requests are something many of us look forward to doing. My guess is have a look around, find some of the 15-20 second clips that you would be interested in and then the artists and P5 can coordinate to get a longer version if available. I know many of us shoot 1 minute to get our needed 20 seconds. If there is a need for longer ones we can all try to record longer on special needs.

Thanks for coming to P5, you'll find P5 and all us artists are very happy to have you here.

Hmmmmmmm...

My gut feeling on this is an equivocal no. Here's why. 2-5 minutes defeats the very purpose of stock footage. If I'm going to spend the time to compose and carefully create a clip that long that will capture the attention of an audience you can be sure it's going to be complicated and therefore very expensive. Sorry to burst the bubble Steelcanyon, but in my 20+ years I have yet the see any clip much longer than 90 seconds maybe at the extreme 100 seconds. As little as 18 shots? A complete show? Who's producing this? What network would want a show with so few shots?? Don't think it's going to happen. Your client may want to hire a shooter to fulfill his needs. I think he'll quickly realize he needs a variety of shots to make it interesting. Would you be interested in a show with so few shots? As Don stated, We're delighted to help you help out, we love our craft, let us prove it.

…and indonasia / europe footage from me! ;-)

Stockshooter – absolutely right! No one will look on this 90 min. because the audience is sleeping before it ends.

Steelcanyon - What did you expect from a 2-5 min. Clip? Different angles, views, actions or one view, only longer? What do you want to pay for it? I thing the best way is to pick up clips from some producer and ask p5 and each producer for a discount.

Rudi,

Discounts? Probably not. We've had this discussion before, pricing is quite fair here, in fact the buyer is doing very well with HD clips at $40-200. We all know how much we have invested in equipment, training and experience. I might entertain discounts if the client is buying a massive amount of footage, however at the point he's better off to hire his own camera crew. Egg & chicken I suppose.

Just the same, the audience would indeed be asleep with such long clips.

respectfully,
Francois

I am glad you brought up this point Stockshooter. I was thinking about this inquiry as I was editing a new segment for promotion and actually could not imagine running a clip even for one minute without falling asleep. Even a few seconds is too long. From what I see to keep peoples attention one needs to do something about every 3 to 4 seconds or so. Of course the exception is a background during an interview or remote talking head. But even then if you watch those types of broadcasts they constantly switch between single talking head and multiple talking heads. There is a vid that shows a guy driving from LA to NY and it is only 4+ minutes.

So perhaps if there is a clearer idea of what this project is all about steelcanyon, you may just be surprised at the feedback and expertise that can come back to you in regards to help and suggestions. But again, this is probably something P5 should handle and then let us "troops" know how we can be of help. :)
