Sony FDR AX100 UHD 4K

The pan really sucks. The tilt is okay, not great, but just okay. I do like the carbon fiber legs a lot and the fact that it can spread beyond the normal tied type tripods. I would say this is more of a photographer's setup than for video. I am most likely going to get the largest version as I have that one with the old LANC remote already. It offers a tough, balanced, liquid and true video head.

Thanks for the warning. Might just do the $88 version, and pop the remote off for use on my better tripods. Nothing worse than a botched pan...

One warning, this is a good video camera but the photos are really not much good. Even at 20 mp the quality of photos is no where the same quality as a frame grab. Don't expect this to be a one camera does all. The photos are good enough for family vacation photos but I do not feel are up to par for stock or selling quality. When viewing at 100% the strange artifacts are just too apparent.

I have not considered the AX-100 for any photo work. If I want photos, then I always have my canons with me for that along with far better glass. As the AX-100 is a video camera, I would not have the same control for photo work in the first place. Each type of camera has its place in the arsenal. It's just like I wouldn't use a screwdriver to drive in a nail.

Rekindle@ Thanks for your continuing comments on the camera - always interesting - still no stock availability in UK.

The footage I've seen looks excellent and more than fit for purpose, as you say videostock50, we're still waiting for distribution in the UK.

Didn't know this camera existed until I started reading this post a few weeks back. Now I'm hooked on the idea of getting one after viewing the Sony clip and your (mostly) positive comments about the camera. . . . so thanks for costing me money:-)

Read the instructions and all they mention about manual focus assist is a magnifier . . . is that correct? No red outlines focus assist etc? With 4k I'm guessing its even more important to nail focus so are you guys/gals finding that an issue?

And have any of you sold any 4k clips from this camera yet(not saying they are no good . . . just wondering what the demand for 4k is at this early stage in its evolution)?

Thanks

Yes there is a "line" focus as well as zebra stripes. I found it confusing to have both on at the same time. Haven't sold any from this one yet but then again only been uploading for a month or so. Seems P5 generally takes a few months for clips to be found and bought although sometimes a new one makes it to the top quicker.

On focus I've never had a problem where I needed the line focus. Auto seems dead-on every time for me. During the day you will find you will use the ND filters often.
