KEY WORDS FORMAT

just keyworded this "golden river w/light snow" #350460

when I enter the phrases "fraser river" and "british columbia" - they get split up.
into "fraser, river", "british, columbia"

Seems to be a complete lottery really - we haven't found a successful way to bring our footage up for keywords. For instance if you input 'horse' you might get various shots (Some of flags for some reason - completely off subject) right at the head.
This effectively shunts everyone who does actually have a shot of a horse way down the list... and consequently the chances of a sale are sorely diminished.
we've taken quite a bit of footage down recently as it seems a bit pointless in terms of upload time versus chances of anyone actually finding your footage for the keyword you put in.

Plus and i hope someone can disavow me of this - it seems various contributors pop up what seems a disproportionate number of times in any search.

As a buyer and seller I'd like to See P5 weed out what looks to me like keywords spamming - It's embarrassing when you're with a client trying to sell them shots from P5 and the search terms bring up material of no relevance.

yep i agree. that's why i believe understanding how to successfully keyword phrases is important.

i.e. as far as I understand, its more accurate (and will result in less 'bad results') to use the phrase "british columbia" to keyword a shot of vancouver, than to use separate words "british" and "columbia".

now if I could only figure out how insert phrases into my comma-spaced keywords!

Yes I put very few keywords in,,, people have it in their head that "exposure" is the key to get noticed. But its only relevent work that needs to be exposed.

I think people who use the fewest keywords should get higher search relevence. If I have a clip of a horse and I have 1 keyword "horse" that should get more rank. If I have 100 keywords, that clip should be pushed to the bottom.

If people are punished for more keywords, they will put only a few in, and only relevant ones in.

I think too few keywords can be just as bad as too much.
If your horse was in a pasture I would at least put pasture, maybe even the type of horse if someone was searching for a specific breed.

this is why P5 tries to limit keywords to 25. I wish they would have an automatic word counter in the keyword block that will not allow more than the specified number of words being inserted. It's a pain in the butt to have to count words manually. Going back through all the old clips and automatically dropping the keywords back is a very very bad idea. Not all keywords are input in the relevant order. Any changes needs to be done manually and selectively. Many artists have several thousand clips and having to manually edit each one because rules change is also unreasonable.

I think a better way is a "nice" email from P5 or other artists suggesting poor keywords and yes .... good keywords that were missed. The review and approval process at P5 should be approving both the footage and keywords for spam.

Is it important to have the most relevant keywords first?
Some of mine are arranged alphabetically.

Where did you see that P5 tries to limit keywords to 25?

Back on April 12, 2008 an e-mail was sent to all active members at the time limiting keywords to no more than 25 not including check boxes. It also put a limit on the number of categories to three that you could use. To use more than 25 keywords will lower your ranking

Thank you for your kind offer, Jason. I, like several thousands others, have joined P5 only after the email was sent, and there was no mention of it in P5 site, except for the Community area. In the mean time, I have done some heavy googling and here are my results:

On June 7th, jason says (excerpt from the said email):

"• Clips are now limited to 25 keywords. For clips with over 25 keywords, we're asking you to edit out the least relevant ones. Beginning on
May 10, we will impose a "penalty" in Search Results, so that the more keywords beyond 25 that a clip has, the lower it will rank in
search results. We hope this will nudge you to go through and remove unnecessary keywords.
Quality Check"

However, on July 19th, Shedii (from P5 team) said:

"We have not downgraded any clips in search results for excessive keywords, because, well, we're running a little behind getting this implemented :)
What will happen is a) we will impose a hard limit of 25 for new clips submitted, b) we will notify everybody with excess keywords, and help out with getting them cleaned up and c) after a time period we may impose a penalty of some sort for those clips that have been blatantly over-keyworded.
If you are keywording your clips accurately, you've got nothing to worry about.
We'll keep everyone updated as we move forward with this. Apologies for taking so long."

I guess I can continue writing 740 keywords and get away with it.
