Phantom 4 pro: has anyone tried it?

@ jakerbreaker and imagevideo
Do you have already footage in your Pond 5 portfolio shot with the P4P, so that I can have a look?

Sorry Mizamook, I took that post down because I wanted to edit it but got distracted and didn't get back to it. Dropped frames is my only gripe right now. Not always, not a lot, but they do happen. Don't know yet if it's just with a particular codec/frame rate or what. I think that the image is very good for what it is. The codec and bit rate aren't robust by any stretch, but they're realistic. The sensor size is nice. Lens is sharp. NDs help. I've uploaded some clips but the curators haven't gotten to 'em yet.

No prob ... I'm not sure what a preview on P5 would show anyway ... but one thing I am suddenly worried about (not so much that I am gonna send it back or anything) is how similar the cam is to the RX100 3/4/5 ... same sensor as far as I can tell as the AX100, X70 ...

I HATE the sunbursts from those cams. But I love shooting into the sun. Now that the P4P has an iris ... well .. what are the flares like? I'm hoping usable, and not those awful multichromatic unnatural looking things like the Sony cams tend to have.

That's one thing I liked a lot about the Mavic ... the sun looked ... well, like the sun. Not a blob, and not an alien starship going into hyperdrive ...

Maybe i pretend to much from the mavic but what do you guys find in the shadow when you shot to the sun?? trees come out with a green solid pattern,no details at all, grass becomes mushy and if you go too fast it loses details everywhere...
Gene i like the mavic flares too but to me this
Kind of shot it's only for silhouettes because of the low dynamic range and the loss of details in the shadow..
I'd dream to have the rx100 sensor quality in this bird..

@Sebolla
What you are saying about the Mavic is exactly like my experience with the Phantom 4 (not Pro)
No detail at all in the shadow, ridiculous dynamic range. Impossible to shoot anything towards South.
Plus gigantic amount of moiree and rolling shutter.
This is why I am thinking of upgrading to the P4P, although I do not expect an enormous improvement, just a bit better, plus a narrower angle of view

P4Pro arrived a couple of weeks ago. First footage out the box was pretty stunning on default settings. Should have some time this week to really give it a workout.

Couple thoughts: If you are expecting a $999 drone/camera to look say, like a "real" camera, you need to adjust your expectations.

The Mavic has better looking footage (to my eye, comparing to my footage and relatively speaking of course) than the hideously more expensive Inspire 1 and bigger (but faster) with the X3 camera, and get this, I've compared it to the X5 camera, and yes, even that. Of course it doesn't compare at all to the X5R shooting raw ... you could buy TWO Mavics for the price of the X5R by itself. But are you that confident you want a $2000 bird with a $3500 camera on it? Bully for you.

If you are having trouble with the way it looks, make adjustments to the settings. And here's where it gets sticky: DJI changes what the settings mean, and sometimes even different depending on whether you are using iOS or Android Go App. So a -2 contrast, -2 saturation will look a certain way on one platform, and then be different on that same platform after the next update. So it's hard to dial in. But basically you MUST turn down the contrast and saturation to get detail in those shadows to come out. The sharpening is a fine line with the Mavic ... depending on which mode ... and the type of detail in the area ... and how fast you are flying, and whether you have an anti-flicker plugin.

It's a flawed camera but as a system it's not so bad especially since it is pocket change cost. You want GH4 quality in the air but don't want to have to get Inspire 1 with X5R or Inspire 2 with X5S ... well .. get something that flies a GH4. It's not gonna be easy to carry, the gimbal itself will cost as much as your Mavic, and you will be tweaking and tinkering all the time. You could try the Yuneec Tornado ... that looks pretty decent specs. Won't fit in your pocket though.

I flew the Matrix with RX100m2, m3, and m4 ... still have all that to fly with, and yeah, sometimes it was great. The rest of the time it's a big, heavy, (beautiful to fly) constantly needing tweaking gimbal setup and parameters, not always delivering the goods due to many factors ... the RX100 wasn't always great due to not being able to control it.

So, based on 4 years fighting with the things, I think having a Mavic for portable incidental use and a P4P for when I can/want to carry something larger for better quality will be golden.

Gene i'm pretty happy about mavic..portability and fast set up is a must for me...said that the camera has limitations...shooting in good light condition gives you acceptable footage in 4k.....shòoting backlight or underexposed is a waste no matter if you deal with contrast or saturation...there is no details at all...at the best you can pull out a mushy hd...
Mizamook 7 Mar 2017 22:28
Not sure why you say that ... being that I shoot into the sun a lot ... pretty happy with my mush, apparently. (Edges of ice and water look fine, but distant trees 4 miles away look bad no matter which way the camera is pointed, regardless of light) But not with the softness on the right side ... THAT is what caused me to send it in for repair.

But my main issue with all these DJI cams (excepting the X5R) is the freaking FLICKER. I've got my fingers crossed the P4P does not have that. I can deal with pretty much everything else.
sebolla74 7 Mar 2017 22:44
Flicker???i call it moire' if we are talking about the same things....but there is no way of getting an acceptable footage shooting to the sun for me..no matter what resolution you are shooting at.....at least if you want to see something in the shadows and have a bit of resolution.....maybe i got a faulty one..:)..
