How to make money in Stock Video and Photography

ironstrike 6 Feb 2011 03:59
hmm sometimes something that looks hard to make to video people is actually easy though.

If you want to do custom jobs that pay thousands of dollars or work on movie projects you have to learn a lot.... You probably have to spend as much time on education that scientist would. There is no such thing as easy money. Even programs like poser that make character generation easy still do not allow customization, and you will not be taken seriously if automed programs are the only thing you use.

Video clips quickly become outdated too, you think in 15 years they will look current? They will look dated, clothing and styles will change.

So lets just drop the idea that easy money will last ... If you rip software to make a few bucks, in the long run its just a waste of your time. The entertainment industry is the worst place to make "easy money."

Frenchtoast,

Ah, well good thing I am on the "up and up" :)

Vader,

I'm not dragging the dead horse with me but I do wonder about this sentiment. Substandard product is directly linked to the price of the clip? The advice many artists, art teachers, gallery owners, and others that I have worked with all say to price according to what you would pay and what you think the market will bear for your intended audience. So if the intended audience is accustomed to paying less than some other segment then pricing it too high just means you're striking out before anyone gives the product a fair shot.

For me my target audience are DJs, VJs, clubs, party people, parents with special needs children (birth to adult ages), etc.

Here are some stats on fractals:

There are 7540 on line.
Only 701 have sold.
Of the 701 none have sold more than once.

Jason,

I use "fractal" with everything checked in the search box. It yields at least 12,000 matches. What search criteria have you been using? Well as others have said it takes persistence and patience to make a difference or see a change in what people are doing.

Cheers

I checked for fractals under video only and those were the stats. The problem I see is that there are a number of artist who don't use categories (abstract or backgrounds) and you are one of them. Now if you searched using all the check boxes (video, sound and after effects) there are 14022 clips online with 707 sales not including multiple sales on some of those clips.

Jason,

I thought I had my fractals in categories. Oh well. Thanks for the update.

Good to see that there are multiple sales of fractal clips. Is that what you were saying after using my search criteria?

I think CG vs video is the wrong way to look at it. Both are suited to certain uses. CG will replace some video - but there is nothing like the spontaneity and creative possibilities of using what is in front of you to make images.

Although, I do think that reality has a way longer shelf life than CG. There will always be new and exciting CG that replaces the old but a great video can be timeless.

I second the motion of dapoopta! Every one of you, change to CG. Stop feeling the emotion of climbing a mountain to film a sunset. Stop feeling the adrenaline rush of filming a bear or a shark from a few feet away. Do not go to a riot to feel the pain of getting hit by a rubber bullet, the pain of tear gas, and being pushed around by police. Stop filming beautiful real women. Change your real world experience to 0's and 1's. Sit in front of your computer all day and see the world through a window.
