Phantom 4 pro: has anyone tried it?

So are you saying you are abnormal person? ;) Yup if not urgent wait for Phantom 5. The 4P was a bandaid for the 4. If it was thought to be that of a significant upgrade it would be called a "5". The Mavic was a great marketing game just like when Crispy Creme donuts came out or every very often with a new IPhone. No need to panic and worry about the long supply chain. Everyone who really could not afford the $1200 Mavic bought it under panic mode so the Mavic 2 and Phantom 5 will not be as long of a wait. DJI maybe learned but probably not.

I find fault with every single piece of gear I own.

I do kinda own a lot of gear.

But DJI takes the cake. They don't learn .. ever. It almost is like they intentionally screw things up. I'm glad I didn't wait for anything - especially not getting into Phantoms before this ... I KNEW they were garbage. So I bought other garbage, which, in some cases was more of a pain, others, clearly better than Phantoms, and of course the Inspire was a joke picture quality wise... Otherwise I sit around twiddling my thumbs getting land based shots and not getting other shots. Plus the experience is invaluable.

However, this is pretty bad - granted, "most" people are flying over suburbs and chasing airliners ... and not in blinding snowstorms where it is apparent that flaws like this can exist ... but ... still .. I took a shot I did the other day with the RX100m4, and compared it ... there is no issue .. it's not me, my monitors, the software, etc ... this IS DJI being dumbass buttheads, and I resent it. https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showpost.php?p=37121580&postcount=6377

Doesn't p4p have aperture ? You still need ND?
Mizamook 19 Mar 2017 04:20
Yeah, but sometimes still too bright, especially considering potential diffraction at f9-f11 (which usually does't bother me much with the RX100m4, but then it is a situational thing) and also the weird decision by DJI to lock D-log ISO at 500 ... so it is very hard to get exposure right. Sure wish it had remote switchable ND like RX100, as when going into stills mode it is better with no ND unless trying to soften water flow, etc. ..

I tend to like higher shutter speeds for aerials (better detail, and motion blur is not as important if the subject is not as close) but not as high as I have had to with no ND's.

You could be seeing some kind of refraction from all the moisture in the air.

No. Sadly.. it's not so benign.

@Jason Thanks for the tip! I actually tried Handbrake first because it was on the '5 best video encoders' list as well and it is free. It transcoded h265 to mp4 without a problem and I was able to see this footage for the first time!

@rekindle My guess is that the Phantom 5 won't bring any big improvements with visual quality over the Phantom 4 Pro.
RekindlePhoto 20 Mar 2017 17:00
It would be a disservice if there is not big improvements otherwise they would have called the p4p a 5. The changes to the p4p was really a lot more than a simple model or firmware upgrade. We'll see.

It still surprises me .. . a total camera revamp is no minor upgrade! Other than my one big flaw found, the rest is truly awesome, especially the cost. Truly remarkable. At least my "issue" is only apparent with lots of snow ... so even if it is unavoidable in this model, it's a flaw that can be avoided ... or at least minimized, by operating the camera differently. Other people are having gimbal drift and horizon issues ... I don't think I've seen that with mine .. not even during my test to check for less rolling shutter effect .. I hovered, and spun in place as fast as possible. .. all the trees stayed straight (no skew) and the horizon stayed put.

I'd buy it again.
