Sony FDR AX100 UHD 4K

Yeah, made my brain hurt.

Reminded me that there's yet another thing I wish they had - made the info display stick around - not disappear after a few seconds. Haven't figured that one out. Really like to see a counter ticking off the seconds. Don't have that, it seems. Am I missing something?

But I do notice (as has my Wifey) that the FS700 is gathering dust. When something cute and furry walks through the yard, I grab the fastest camera for the job - that being AX100. And the FS700 upgrade/4K/2K idea is looking more expensive and less workable, especially considering ROI. Hope the AX100 holds up.

Hey Gene,
Just looked at your apocalyptic AX100 time-lapse you posted on the other thread. How is time-lapse done on this camera - is it speeded up real time or stills.

So far there's no stock round here of either camera - AX100/GH4 - so I'm sitting on the side lines and the 5D3 is being used but looks a bit miffed at upcoming redundancy.

Hey Paul, On the AX100, real time is the only option for time lapse. Not a big deal, really, since it's easy to pull the wondrous whatever-it-is that flies across the field of view for a real time clip, then clone the damn thing out for the time lapse. I suppose holding the still photo button down with a rubber band might work, combined with the inherent delay, hmmm....but then, if you wanted a still photo sequence time lapse, that's missing the point for this camera. Still. (checked) Nope, holding the button down doesn't work. Just takes one and stops.

So then, if one must insist, you might have to go this route: http://tempus.bymac.org/

All that said, I really love the way this camera grabs tiny details. So it's real fun with clouds. As long as it's kept from blooming on the highlights, it's all good.

Can you can tell I'm such a newbie on this camcorder business ;-)
Love the way you're throwing this little camera around and getting the best out of it.

No, actually, I could not tell, but I wasn't thinking about it that way. It is actually surprising there is not some form of interval recording on this Handycam. Shame on you, Sony!

It is a fun camera to throw around. Getting the most of it is only proven by deleting all the rubbish I also get with it!

Found this link at YT, beside all technical explanations here's a concrete visual impression to decide between Sony or GH4:

Just updated to 2.0, though it took forever to find the USB cable! (had to go to the manual, end even then...) Who knew there even was one.
Mizamook, there is a setting to keep the info display from disappearing -- it's in the Setup Menu/display settings.

Beckhusen - As much as I agree, and I do, that the GH4 is a "better" camera more so because it has control over things the AX100 does not even pretend to, and can use different lenses, that comparison video is skewed. I might consider a GH4 for later, but when hanging off a boat with one hand the GH4 would not work so well. Changing lenses in rain and salt spray would not works so well either. The comparison video looks to have been shot on different days with different color casts. Comparing 4x digital zoom on a a 300mm lens with 140x digital zoom is a goofy thing to do. Then there's the additional Youtube compression to muck things up - doesn't look like the AX100 I know! (I don't have any experience with the GH4, so can't do my own test in my own way) When it comes down to it, as Lord Vader says in the other Panasonic camera thread - he doesn't look at the weaknesses, but uses the strengths. THat is what I'm doing here, especially for stock, where I have sold many many clips that were not as perfect as I like, but got the shot with what I had, and for me, the AX100 is the fast handy cam that gets the shot when I don't have time to go for the FS700, 4K or not. Or when I need something with more reach and resolution than the RX100m2, which lives happily in my denim jacket pocket at all times.

If the AX100 had the control like the GH4, I'd be stoked. SO I'm actually hoping the "pro" version coming out in a year has all that!

bakdc - Thanks! I never tried disabling that Auto setting. Thought it was for the viewfinder. Now I have my recording time counter, too!

Actually, regarding the update, I can't say I'm seeing any improvement - in fact, looks like the Autofocus is seeming slower!

Miz - for remote control you need to get the new version of tripod from Sony that has a universal controller with four different cables for the various connection from LANC to multi (See: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/913260-REG/sony_vctvpr100_highend_remote_tripod.html) _ I have the smaller carbon fiber version. Works well except for a crappy head.
Mizamook 23 Jun 2014 01:16
Vader, thanks....I was considering a smaller lighter tripod, especially lately, like today, when I didn't take a tripod at all, and sure could have used one. How crappy is the head? Might even go smaller, for $85, would be small enough maybe to not notice on a hike, but handy to have just in case. Or could take off the remote and stick it on the handle of my Vinten, if I was wanting more smoothness and stability. Balancing a camera on a tree branch in the rain just doesn't do it for me.
