Sony FDR AX100 UHD 4K

About the XYST1M Stereo-Mikrofon till now i'm absolute not happy. The cat muff is a shame, same like nothing by testing with offshore wind. For the next try out in a forest with some wind i filled the muff aditional with some cotton and there are still also bad tones of the wind left. :( The next test i will make with a shortened foam rubber muff of an older shotgun mic, but with this i can record only in center position and cannot move the both mics to wide position.
I think the more expensive shotgun mic is a much better solution, especially because you can buy and use additional muffs.
For my old Sony camcorder i had a very cheap additional plastic shotgun mic and was never unlucky like now.

Something else what i note is that videos filmed in a forest at a sunny day seem to be very overexposured. That means when i render the video i will have to set the gamma between -30 up to -50 to see what i have seen with my eyes. Seems as if the white balance doesn't work well in sunny forest.
Has anybody else this experience? Or are my flatscreen settings deceiving me?

Thanks for the report! Sorry you are unhappy.

Sunny forest is problematic. I use zebras lately, set at 100% and make sure never to overexpose the hot spots, and it looks much better. I've noticed this with green in general, especially foliage, grass, etc. Tone it way down otherwise it looks neon.

Are you using Cinetone or whatever? I am, and I "think" I like it better.

Movements must be super slow.

Note: When doing timelapses in shifting light, don't forget to turn off AWB. Idiot! (that's me)

Otherwise AWB seems pretty good for run 'n gun.

I haven't tried any muffs or anything, but I did find a clip or two I was annoyed by when the slight breeze ruined the audio. So I'm with you on that account.

Don't know what is or means zebras and also what is Cinetone? :(
I render in Magix Pro X6 and taking down Gamma and additional add some more color let me see that what i've seen in the reality. Since all times i shoot with AWB, maybe it's time to try out other ways and learn some more. ;) But i can't imagine how to handle manual WB when shooting a tilt from the ground to the centered horizon with trees and up to the sky while crossing the sun, or also a pan with quite different light areas.
In color correction i see more problems with red (not depending the AX100). Maybe i note this because green is a more friendly color and a little bit too much doesn't make so much glow effect like a little bit too much red which is a alarm color by nature. I spend much time in the woods if i have and can't get enough of this green. Maybe it's also psychic how everybody of us note the one or other color?

Incomplete answer because I'm out of time.

Zebras are exposure helpers. The option to turn them on is in the settings in the same section as focus peaking.

I love AWB, most of the time it is very good.

I like green too, overexposed green on this cam turns to nuclear neon, so I don't like that. Dark makes it more natural, like what was there.

Cinematone is a preset color profile...it tends to make things a bit richer in some ways, more contrasty, but also slightly muted if that makes any sense. I "think" it's treating highlights better. I hate that sun blob banding one can get...this seemes to help with the gradients. In my case I am not approaching it from a normal scientific way, as I can't set the preset, I'm not really sure what it's doing. Look in your menus...turn it on, shoot, turn it off, shoot the same thing. See if you like it either way better. Let me know, as I can't make up my mind. Open to correction on its effects, too...

This camera seems to also make a color cast of the predominant color. Sometimes takes some pretty aggressive correction to cut it.

Gotta run...

Ups, as it seems my desktop monitor settings are wrong after reseting. In my office PC it looks much darker. So it's what i thought before, the AWB camera setting can't be so wrong, .... what doesn't mean it's well in all situations. Now i have to render a whole batch new :(
This opens the question, how to be sure to have best flatscreen monitor gamma settings. I'm sure to have followed my flatscreen setting instructions right, which said i've to set more gamma?

Can answer myself: Spyder4EXPRESS or Spyder4ELITE which we had in another thread!
Time to buy it now.

Spyder is awesome. That's all I have to say about that. :)

I looked at the Spyder website and I see they emphasize its good for setting color correctly but little mention is made of contrast and brightness. Anyone know if they are good at setting those? I have 2 monitors and one is naturally more contrasty than the other though they are both Dells. Would love to be able to set them correctly or even just one so I have a correct reference point.

Regarding AWB on the AX100 I always run the WB in manual. Set to 5000(sunlight) most of the time but easy to alter up or down with the onscreen + and - button. Better a consistent WB than it altering on you in the middle of a shot . . . if its off by a little bit easy to fix in post.

birkley,
that's a great tip, i will try the manual WB with ~5000. I often make pan videos and when moving from a sunny to shadow area it suddenly becomes too dark.

I have ordered the SpyderPro now. As i understand it's also well for the brightness and multi-monitor systems.

When outdoors I have my WB set to "daylight" which I think they've probably made a 'midday' 5500

Mizamook: says <<Cinematone is a preset color profile...it tends to make things a bit richer in some ways, more contrasty, but also slightly muted if that makes any sense]>>

I tried that (cinematone) to begin with and found the, already over contrasty clips, more contrasty and vibrant so switched it off.

No; your "more contrasty but also slightly muted" doesn't make sense ;-))
But there again you have a trillion times more experience and knowledge on all this than me so I'd better take another look!
