Snake River Dam Removal Protest Rallies - Tacoma
Protest rallies held in Tacoma WA to remove the lower 4 Snake River Dams in order to protect salmon reproduction and the local Orca Whale pods dependent upon Chinook salmon for survival. The rallies included a march to the local Congressional officials' offices in downtown Tacoma, and a Totem Pole Journey celebration by the Lummi Tribe's "House of Tears Carvers" at St. Leo's Church in Tacoma. The carvers sang and drummed next to a large totem pole honoring Orca whale J-35 Tahlequah and her dead baby. Tahlequah carried her calf Cali's body for 17 days in grief when Cali died shortly after birth in 2018.
African Clawed Frog Trapping
Volunteers for Trout Unlimited setting, baiting and checking traps to catch the invasive species African Clawed Frog. The invasive species American Bullfrog, not native to the Puget Sound region, is also trapped and euthanized. The frogs eat young Kokanee Salmon and the fry of other endangered Salmon species such as Chinook Salmon. The endangered local Orca Whale J, K and L pods are dependent upon Chinook salmon and other Puget Sound salmon for survival. At certain times of the year 100% of the local orca whale diet consists of Chinook Salmon. The euthanized African Clawed Frogs are frozen and turned over to the U S Geological Survey and University of Washington for study.
Snake River Dam Removal Protest Rallies - Olympia WA
Protest rally held in Olympia WA to remove the lower 4 Snake River Dams in order to protect salmon reproduction and the local Orca Whale pods dependent upon Chinook salmon for survival. The rally included included speeches by local tribal, faith community, youth, non-profit organization, and government representatives to rally the group. The group then marched down the streets of Olympia to the State Capitol Grounds, after the marching band played rally songs in a local park. Protestors encouraged state and federal legislators to develop a plan and take down the 4 lower Snake River dams in order to protect endangered salmon and steelhead runs. These include the Chinook salmon, which the endangered local Puget Sound J, K and L Orca whale pods depend upon for survival.
