Historically, Simon's Town has always been a naval base: during the British occupation it was controlled by the Royal Navy, today it houses the South African Navy. The strategic importance of the place is linked to the very position of the Cape of Good Hope, which lies between the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean.
